Benfica news: Djebbour targeted, Cardozo stays, Fonte triggers interest

New boss Quique Flores busy reformulating squad

Among the constant rumours linking Benfica to a host of players, talk of the signing of striker Rafik Djebbour appears to be well grounded. The Eagles are keen on taking the Algerian international on, although they are trying to reduce the 3m euro asking price from his club, Panionios.

Djebbour, who scored 14 goals for the Greek side last season, is excited about a prospective move to Lisbon. “Everyone knows of Benfica. They are a big club, one of the biggest in Europe. I cannot hide my desire to play at Benfica. I am very excited,” said the marksman.

“I know of Benfica’s interest and that contact has been made, but at the moment I still have not signed a contract.”

Benfica’s top scorer last season, Oscar Cardozo, has reiterated his desire to stay with the club. The Paraguayan international netted 22 goals in all competitions for the Eagles last season, which has made him the subject of much transfer speculation.

“I am with the club to win titles, namely the Portuguese championship and I do not want to think about any other experience,” said Cardozo after Paraguay’s friendly against France. “I have four more years on my contract and I get along with everyone. I will only leave after becoming champion.”

Portsmouth eye Fonte swoop

One of Benfica’s youth products who has garnered a lot of interest lately is central defender Jose Fonte. The Portuguese stopper has been on loan with Championship side Crystal Palace, and both his current club and Portsmouth are trying to tie down the defender.

The recently crowned FA Cup winners have taken a liking to the player and are considering bringing the player to Fratton Park. Fonte himself is delighted at the interested shown by Pompey, but is keeping his feet firmly on the ground.

“We cannot live waiting for possible contracts. At present, no-one has spoken to me and as a result I will remain calm and wait to see what happens.

“Portsmouth are a big club in England and they have a very good coach. If there is actual interest, it would be an honour,” stated the 24-year-old.

Portsmouth are in the market for a central defender as a replacement for Sol Campbell, who is nearing the end of his career. The Premiership club have also shown interest in Benfica’s Brazilian centre-back Lusiao.
