Benfica close to tying up deals for Pongolle and Martins

Recreativo da Huelva pair pencilled in by Quique Flores

Carlos Martins

Multiple reports in Portugal suggest that Benfica are close to striking a deal which would see Recreativo da Huelva duo Florent Sinama-Pongolle and Carlos Martins make a move to the Estadio da Luz.

It is believed that the pair are highly rated by Benfica coach Quique Flores and that the Lisbon giants are willing to shell out 10m euros for the duo.

Sinama-Pongolle, who scored a total of 21 goals in 65 appearances for the La Liga side, joined the club in 2006 and has a contract until 2011. The former Liverpool ace says he is seriously pondering an offer made by Benfica.

“Benfica have made Recreativo de Huelva, as well as myself, an offer, but nothing has been signed,” admitted the French international to Portuguese daily O Jogo. “Rui Costa explained Benfica’s project to me in detail. Their offer was very good, but I still would like to study their proposal further.

“Benfica are a big club; one which has the most fans, and a club with a lot of ambition as they are always in the European competitions. On top of that, Portuguese football has a lot of quality.”

Martins eyes Portugal return

As for Carlos Martins, the player has expressed his desire in making a move back to Portugal and would have no problem donning a Benfica jersey.

The former Sporting player has had a breakthrough season with Recreativo, making 31 appearances, scoring six goals and, as a result, even earning a call-up to the national team although he missed out on the Euro 2008 squad.

The Portuguese international is seen as a key midfield figure by Flores, along with Yebda and Petit. Should Martins seal a move to Benfica then Sporting would receive 40% of any transfer, as stipulated in the deal which saw the player move to the Spanish club.
