Deco: “We’re candidates to win Euro 2008”

Portugal squad assembles for training camp in Viseu

The majority of Portugal’s 23-man squad have arrived in Viseu in the north of the country to take part in the pre-Euro 2008 training camp.

Only the four players involved in tomorrow’s Champions League final – Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira – and Real Madrid’s Pepe are yet to join the party as they play out the final moments of the 2007/08 season at their club sides.

Despite a stuttering qualification campaign and poor recent showings, the mood among the squad is one of optimism given Portugal’s performances at the last two major tournaments under the guidance of Brazilian World Cup winning coach Luiz Felipe Scolari.

Deco exemplified this spirit in his declarations upon meeting up with his team-mates. “We’ve got time together now, and with time we will improve. Of course we’re candidates to win. Just look at recent history, which is in our favour.”

The Barcelona player refused to be drawn into controversy regarding the absence of his former FC Porto team-mate Maniche, saying “Maniche is a great player, he’s already done great things for the national team, but the coach will have his reasons for making his selection.”

“One match at a time”

Atletico de Madrid winger Simao Sabrosa opted for a more cautious outlook when asked about Portugal’s chances of glory in Austria and Switzerland. “I think it’s important that we keep our feet firmly on the ground.”

“It would be easy to say we can be champions, but this would only complicate our mission. If we take it one match at a time we can go far. We want to conquer something important for our country.”

Another La Liga player who was radiant to join his colleagues was Real Betis goalkeeper Ricardo. “We’re prepared to work with dedication and honour for Portugal. This group has been together for a long time, apart from a few exceptions, and this is very important in a competition like this.”

The keeper, who played such a key role at Euro 2004 and World Cup 2006, brushed aside suggestions that he was not at his best. “I feel in good form. I’m in perfect shape, as you can see. I’m only thinking of working and giving my best.”

Portugal play their first match in the tournament on Saturday 7 June against Turkey in Geneva.
