Switzerland 2-0 Portugal - Match Reaction

Luiz Felipe Scolari, Portugal coach:

“It was a normal game with a normal victory for Switzerland. What lesson did we learn? That we had to win our first two matches! We still do not know who our adversary will be - only tomorrow. In principal, I will have the whole squad at my disposal. Any soreness that may exist will be treated.

“The players who have not played much have less rhythm and there were some difficulties which we felt in the second half. As a result, Joao Moutinho’s entry was important. We made that substitution to try and control the midfield, which we had lost, but unfortunately it did not happen.

“What it did do was give Joao Moutinho more playing time which was good for him and we are content with what he did.”

Cristiano Ronaldo:

“It’s a different view from what I’m used to when on the bench. I did not like it too much in all sincerity. But the coach made his decisions for this game and we have to respect them.”

Fernando Meira:

“The exhibition was not conducive with what he had hoped. We really wanted to win today and end the group phase with three victories. I believe for those watching it was an attractive match with a lot of goalscoring opportunities. Portugal could have had the advantage and then we could have bossed the match in a different manner.

“After conceding the first goal, we did not manage to react. The adversary made our lives a little difficult and they wanted to get their first victory in the tournament, and I think Switzerland had not beaten us in 26 years.

“In my debut as captain of the national team, I had hoped that it would be different. I felt very proud and motivated to help my colleagues. But what is important is that Portugal will continue in the Euros and we will have five days of maximum concentration.”

Jorge Ribeiro:

“This loss does not hinder us because we were already qualified in first place, which was deserved. Tonight we were good in the first half, but not at the level as the last two matches. In the second half Nani hit the post and we could have won through Quaresma’s effort.”

Raul Meireles:

“This game was an opportunity for those who have not played much. We had a little bit of bad luck. We did not make good on some of the opportunities we had and Switzerland were luckier in this aspect.

“Our team was well organised, but in the first half there were some dangerous dead-ball situations in our area, but we had occasions to score and I don’t know if Postiga’s goal was correctly ruled out. We had some bad luck, but the group continues to be motivated. It is not worth talking about the officiating anymore because we all saw what happened.”

Helder Postiga:

“The result was a pity. I had a goal which was badly disallowed. We had a lot of chances on to score, but it was not possible to win. How did I feel? I feel good and I am happy to have my future settled (with Sporting), but at this moment I have my head focused on this championship.

“The outlook for the next phase? In principal it will be Germany in the quarter-finals. We will try to be at our maximum force for the next match and will seek to study our adversary in the best manner possible.”
