Mendes lifts FA Cup

Pedro Mendes was handed a start in the Portsmouth midfield as the south coast club won the FA Cup for only the second time in their history with a 1-0 win over Cardiff City at Wembley. The Portuguese, who is widely expected to leave Fratton Park over the summer, played 77 minutes before being replaced as Nwankwo Kanu’s first half goal proved the difference between the sides.

France - Ligue 1

PSG stay up

Paris Saint-Germain can look forward to next weekend’s French Cup with Lyon final safe in the knowledge that they will still be in Ligue 1 next season. The club from the capital got the win they needed to escape relegation trouble, beating Sochaux 2-1 away from home, with Pedro Pauleta playing 70 minutes before being replaced on his final league appearance.

There was no such luck for Lens, however, as the northern club dropped into the second tier after they could only manage a 2-2 draw with Bordeaux. Portuguese defender Marco Ramos was an unused substitute for Lens, who were French champions as recently as 1998.

Italy - Serie A

Inter clinch title

Inter successfully retained the Scudetto title after two second half goals from substitute Zlatan Ibrahimovic were enough to beat Parma, who were relegated from Serie A. Portuguese midfielder Vitor Pele came on in the second half for Inter, who won 2-0 to hold off the challenge of Roma. The capital club had been heading for the title at half time, with their 1-0 lead over Catania and Inter yet to make a breakthrough, but with Vitorino Antunes left on the bench, Roma conceded a late equaliser. Fernando Couto played in the Parma side beaten by Inter, meaning the Gialloblu drop down to Serie B.

In what could be his last appearance for Juventus, Tiago played the full ninety minutes as the Bianconeri drew 3-3 with Sampdoria. Manuel da Costa was again left out of the Fiorentina squad as his side secured a place in the Champions League by finishing 4th with a 1-0 win at Torino.

Real finish in style

Champions Real Madrid rounded off the season with a 5-2 hammering of Levante at the Bernabeu, with Pepe playing the full ninety minutes in defence. Elsewhere, Barcelona secured third with an emphatic victory, beating Murcia 5-3 with Deco not involved.

Third place Atletico Madrid handed Ze Castro a rare start in a 3-1 defeat to Valencia. Simao Sabrosa also started for Los Rojiblancos, but was replaced at half time, while Valencia did not include Miguel or Marco Caneira in their match squad.

Serbia

Partizan Belgrade need just one point from their final match to guarantee the Serbian title, following a 1-0 home win over Hajduk Kula. Almani Moreira played the full ninety minutes for Partizan, while Ednilson was left on the substitutes bench. A draw next week at 5th place Nepredak Krusevac.

Metalurg Donetsk ended the Ukrainian season with an 11th place finish, after suffering a 4-1 defeat at city rivals and newly crowned champions Shakhtar Donetsk. Ricardo Fernandes, who moved to Metalurg in January, was not involved in the match.
