England - Community Shield

Portuguese winger Nani was in the Manchester United line-up as the Red Devils beat Portsmouth on penalties to win the Community Shield at Wembley after a goalless draw. The curtain-raiser for the new English season, which pits the league champions against the FA Cup winners, was the last domestic appearance the 21-year-old will make in the near future, with a suspension from last season set to keep him out of United’s opening two league matches.

Pedro Mendes was in the Pompey starting line-up, while Cristiano Ronaldo watched from the stands as he recovers from an ankle operation.

Others

Romania

The big game of the weekend in Romania saw champions CFR Cluj lose 1-0 to leaders Rapid Bucharest on Saturday. Several Portuguese players were involved in the match, with Paulo Andrade and Ricardo Fernandes in Jose Peseiro’s Rapid side, and Cluj including Tony, Ricardo Cadu and Dani in their starting line-up.

Last season’s runners-up Steaua Bucharest introduced Tiago Gomes on 83 minutes as they won 2-0 at Politehnica Iasi, who brought Nuno Viveiros on just after the hour.

Russia

Dynamo Moscow moved up into second place in the Russian Premier League with a narrow 1-0 home win against Amkar Pern on Sunday. Danny played the full ninety minutes for Dynamo, who are currently two points behind Rubin Kazan with 17 rounds of the season played. Defender Ricardo Silva was in the Shinnik Yaroslavl team that lost 2-1 at home to Luch Vladivostok.

Scotland

Former Chelsea winger Felipe Morais played the final half hour of Hibernian’s 1-0 defeat at Kilmarnock on the opening weekend of the Scottish Premier League. The Edinburgh club finished fifth in the Scottish top flight last season.

Switzerland

Swiss champions FC Basel continued their good start to the new Super League season with a crushing 4-0 win over FC Vaduz on Saturday. Portuguese forward Carlitos started the match, but was withdrawn on 66 minutes with his side already two goals up. With four wins and one draw from their opening five matches, Basel currently lie in second place, but do have one game-in-hand over early pacesetters FC Aarau, whom they trail by two points.

That is because Aarau beat FC Luzern 1-0 on the same day. Luzern, who are rock bottom of the table with just one point from five games, fielded summer signing Nelson Ferreira and the Portuguese played the full ninety minutes. Luzern’s current plight is a familiar situation for Ferreira, who was relegated with FC Thun last season.

Ukraine

Metalurh Donetsk maintained their 100% record in the Ukrainian Premier League by racking up a fourth consecutive league victory with a 3-0 win over FC Kharkiv. Ricardo Fernandes scored the second goal for Metalurg, while summer arrival Mario Sergio played in defence.

The former Sporting and FC Porto midfielder got on the scoresheet as his team signalled their intentions of fighting all the way for the Ukranian League title this season.
