Chelsea run halted

Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Chelsea side saw their 100% record ended by Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge, with the London derby ending in a 1-1 draw. Spain - La Liga

Coruna stun Real

Real Madrid’s title defence got off to a bad start with a 2-1 defeat at Deportivo La Coruna at the Riazor Stadium on Sunday evening. Both sides had a Portuguese in defence, with Ze Castro of Deportivo getting off to a winning start on his club debut, at the expense of Pepe’s Real.

Valencia also got off to a winning start, with Miguel starting at right-back as Los Ches beat Mallorca 3-0 at the Mestalla. Manuel Fernandes came on after twenty minutes for the hosts, while Jose Nunes was in the Mallorca backline. Elsewhere, both Maniche and Simao Sabrosa started as Atletico Madrid ran out 4-0 winners against Malaga, who handed a second debut to Duda, who returned to the club during the close season.

Nelson’s transfer to Real Betis came too late for him to make his debut in the Andalucian club’s match with Recreativo Huelva, which they lost 1-0 with Ricardo left on the bench. Roberto Beto was not in the visiting Recre squad. Summer signing Ze Antonio was not included in the Racing Santander party for their 1-1 draw with Sevilla.

Greece

Edinho started the new Greek season with a goal in AEK Athens’ 2-1 victory over Panathinaikos on Sunday. The former Setubal forward, who scored seven goals in 14 appearances on-loan in the Greek capital last season, opened the scoring on 20 minutes.

Sergio Conceicao was also amongst the goals for Fernando Santos’ PAOK, who won 2-0 at OFI. Former Portugal international Conceicao doubled his team’s lead shortly before half time, while summer signing Vieirinha was also in the PAOK side. Luis Lourenco came on for the final fifteen minutes of Panionios’ 1-0 home defeat to Skoda Xanthi.

Romania

Elsewhere, Jose Peseiro’s Rapid Bucharest were beaten 1-0 at Politehnica Timisoara, with Ricardo Fernandes and Joao Andrade in the starting lineup.

Scotland

Pedro Mendes marked his first Old Firm derby with a goal as Rangers ran out 4-2 winners over Celtic in Glasgow. The Portuguese midfielder scored just after the hour mark to give his side a 3-1 lead at the home of their arch rivals, to continue what has been a hugely promising start to life in Scotland for the former Porto man.

Serbia

Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade bounced back from their midweek Champions League disappointment with a 3-0 win over OFK Beograd on Sunday. Partizan no. 10 Almani Moreira played the full ninety minutes for his side, who lead the table with three wins from their opening three matches of the new campaign.

Switzerland

With just eight matches gone in the new Swiss season, champions FC Basel have already opened up a six-point lead at the top of the Super League. With Carlitos in the side, Basel won 2-0 at Aarau, and the Portuguese was replaced in the dying minutes. Nelson Ferreira came on for the final fifteen minutes for FC Luzern as the rock-bottom club drew 1-1 at home with FC Sion.

Turkey

Following their midweek elimination from the Champions League qualification round, Galatasaray had another uninspiring result when resuming domestic duties. Fernando Meira started in central defence as the champions were held to a 0-0 draw at Kayserispor.

Ukraine

Early season pacesetters Metalurh Donetsk lost their 100% record in the Ukrainian league after they were beaten 1-0 at Dynamo Kiev on Sunday night. Both Ricardo Fernandes and defender Mario Sergio started the match for Metalurh, who now have a two-point lead over Dynamo at the top of the Premier League.
