England - Premier League

Carvalho hits the net

Ricardo Carvalho scored his first goal of the season on Saturday, getting a first-half equaliser from close range in Chelsea’s 3-1 victory over Manchester City. Jose Bosingwa joined Carvalho in the Blues defence, while Deco played in midfield and Henrique Hilario was Luiz Felipe Scolari’s back-up goalkeeping option on the substitutes’ bench.

Chelsea lead the table on goal difference from Liverpool, who inflicted Manchester United’s first defeat of the Premiership season at Anfield. The Red Devils, who are still without Cristiano Ronaldo, surrendered an early lead given to them by Carlos Tevez, and despite the introduction of Nani late on, lost to their bitter rivals to remain in the lower half of the table.

Luis Boa Morte started but was replaced with ten minutes left to play as West Ham, who appointed Gianfranco Zola as manager over the weekend, went down 3-2 at West Bromwich Albion. Pedro Pele was not in Tony Mowbray’s WBA squad for the match. Nuno Valente watched from the bench as Everton won 3-2 at newly promoted Stoke City.

Germany - Bundesliga

Costa on the mark

Ricardo Costa was on the score sheet for Wolfsburg in their 2-2 draw at Hertha Berlin. The Portuguese defender opened the scoring in the first minute for his team, but Wolfsburg ended up scraping a point with a last-minute equaliser to stay in 8th place. Three goals in the final fifteen minutes gave Werder Bremen their first win of the Bundesliga season on Saturday. Hugo Almeida was an unused substitute as Bremen beat Energie Cottbus 3-0 at home.

Armando Petit played the full ninety minutes as promoted Cologne were thrashed 3-0 at home by champions Bayern Munich. Elsewhere, Daniel Fernandes kept goal as Bochum beat Bielefeld 2-0, while Sergio Pinto played the final ten minutes of Hannover’s 5-1 win over Gladbach.

Italy - Serie A

Quaresma makes scoring debut

Ricardo Quaresma marked his arrival in Italy in spectacular style as Jose Mourinho’s Inter beat Catania 2-1 to claim their first league win under the Portuguese. Both Quaresma and Luis Figo started for the Nerazurri, and the summer arrival from Porto equalised for his side shortly before half time, with his trademark trivela taking a huge deflection before finding the near post. Inter went down to ten men shortly before half time when Sulley Muntari was sent off, while Figo was replaced at the break.

Vitorino Antunes, who is on loan from Roma, played the full ninety minutes for Lecce as they beat Chievo 2-0, while Manuel da Costa was handed a start in central defence by Fiorentina, but saw his side lose a 1-0 lead to go down 2-1 at Napoli. Tiago Mendes was not in the Juventus squad for their 1-0 win over Udinese and Goncalo Brandao was not involved as Siena ran out 2-0 winners over Cagliari.

Spain - La Liga

Real Madrid win thriller

Champions Real Madrid, with Pepe in defence, bounced back from their disappointing defeat to Deportivo in week one by beating Numancia 4-3 in a seven-goal thriller at the Bernabeu. It was also a positive weekend for Jorge Goncalves and Racing Santander, with the Portuguese impressing as his side held Barcelona 1-1 at Camp Nou. Atletico Madrid, however, suffered a surprise defeat as Simao Sabrosa and Maniche both started in a 2-1 defeat at Valladolid.

Nelson was handed his Real Betis debut on Sunday, following his summer move from Benfica, and the right-back played the full ninety minutes in a goalless draw. Portuguese international goalkeeper Ricardo was left on the bench by Betis. Miguel and Manuel Fernandes both started for Valencia at Almeria, with Fernandes withdrawn halfway through the second half as the sides played out a 2-2 draw.

Ze Castro was in the Deportivo La Coruna backline during their 1-0 loss at Villarreal, while Jose Nunes and Mallorca conceded an 85th minute equaliser and were held 1-1 at home by Osasuna. Duda played the full ninety minutes for Malaga in their goalless draw with Athletic Bilbao. Roberto Beto watched from the bench as his Recreativo Huelva side were beaten 1-0 at home by Espanyol.
