England - Premier League

Ronaldo hits another brace

Cristiano Ronaldo has returned to the goalscoring form of last season, with another brace in Manchester United’s 4-3 win over Hull City making it four goals in two games for the Portuguese. Ronaldo, who was joined in the starting eleven by Nani, opened the scoring in the second minute, before putting United 3-1 up before half time with a header from Nani’s corner.

Luiz Felipe Scolari’s Chelsea are the new Premiership leaders, and the Blues 5-0 win over Sunderland at Stamford Bridge means they have scored 27 goals in their opening 11 matches. Jose Bosingwa and Deco both started for Chelsea, while Hilario was on the substitutes bench, but Ricardo Carvalho and Paulo Ferreira were absent from the match squad.

Luis Boa Morte started ahead of being replaced on 84 minutes as West Ham United earned a 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough, while Everton’s Nuno Valente and Ricardo Vaz Te of Bolton were not in action for their clubs this weekend in the Premiership.

Germany - Bundesliga

Petit scores his first Cologne goal

Armando Petit scored his first goal in German football for Cologne, getting the late clincher as his side were 3-1 winners away to Stuttgart. Elsewhere, Daniel Fernandes was in goal for Bochum’s 1-1 draw at Borussia Dortmund.

Hugo Almeida was not included in the Werder Bremen squad as they beat Hertha Berlin 5-1 on Saturday, while Ricardo Costa was again left on the bench by Wolfsburg manager Felix Magath for their 2-0 defeat at Bayer Levekusen. Sergio Pinto was also left on the sidelines as Hannover stunned Hamburg 3-0 at the AWD Arena.

Italy - Serie A

Last-gasp Inter

A last-gasp winner from Ivan Cordoba gave champions Inter a much-needed 3-2 victory at Reggina on Saturday. After two goalless draws in their previous two games, Nerazurri boss Jose Mourinho handed Ricardo Quaresma a start at the Stadio Granillo, substituting the Portuguese with eight minutes left to play.

Tiago was handed a starting place for the second match running as Juventus beat Roma 2-0 in Turin to move up to 6th in Serie A. Vitorino Antunes played the full ninety minutes for Lecce in their 0-0 draw with Atalanta. Manuel da Costa was left on the bench as Fiorentina were beaten 1-0 at Siena.

Spain - La Liga

Valencia knocked off their perch

Previous leaders Valencia lost for the first time in La Liga this season, and dropped to third in the table after Racing Santander stunned Los Ches with a 4-2 win at the Mestalla. Both Miguel and Manuel Fernandes, who was replaced after an hour, started for Valencia, while Racing introduced Jorge Goncalves in the closing minutes.

Real Madrid missed the chance to go top, while Pepe was taken off with injury early in the second half of their 1-1 draw with Almeria. Barcelona are the new leaders in Spain after a 4-1 win at Malaga, with Duda scoring the home side’s goal – an equaliser on 12 minutes – as both Helder Rosario and Eliseu also started for the Andalusian club.

Atletico Madrid are up into sixth after a 2-0 home victory over Mallorca at the Vicente Calderon. Maniche and Simao Sabrosa were both in the Atletico side, while Jose Nunes was a substitute for Mallorca as two first-half goals from Sergio Aguero settled the match.

There was a Portuguese on either side as Deportivo, with Ze Castro, won 3-0 at Real Betis, who as well as selecting Nelson at right-back had Ricardo as their backup goalkeeping option on the bench. Roberto Beto was an unused substitute in Recreativo Huelva’s 1-1 draw with Getafe.

France

On-loan Porto midfielder Paulo Machado came on for the final half hour, but could not prevent St Etienne from yet another defeat, this time losing 3-1 at Marseille. The result, which was Les Verts’ fourth consecutive league defeat, sees St Etienne in 17th place in Ligue 1 with twelve matches played.

Greece

Edinho started but was taken off at half time as AEK Athens beat Asteras Tripolis 2-1 in the Greek capital. Geraldo Alves was on the AEK bench, while Asteras manager Carlos Carvalhal had Ricardo Esteves and Fabio Felicio on the sidelines.

Former Benfica manager Fernando Santos played Sergio Conceicao for PAOK Saloniki in their 1-1 draw at local rivals Iraklis. Daniel Kenedy played the full ninety minutes for Ergotelis in their 2-0 loss at champions Olympiakos, while Manuel Lopes was in the Panthrakikos side which won 1-0 against Thrasivoulos Fylis. Lourenco watched from the bench as his Panionios side were beaten 2-1 at home by Panathinaikos.

Romania

The capital’s top two met in Romania this weekend, with Dinamo Bucharest and Steaua Bucharest drawing 1-1 on Saturday. Antonio Semedo started for Steaua, who led through Pantelis Kapetanos’ early goal, but were pegged back when Andrei Cristea snatched an 83rd minute leveller for Dinamo.

Four of the weekend’s matches in Romania were played on Friday evening, when CFR Cluj were 1-0 winners over Unirea Urziceni, with Tony and Ricardo Cadu in the champions’ defence, while Bruno Fernandes was on the losing side. Nuno Viveiros played in defence for Poli Iasi in their 1-1 home draw with Pandurii Targu-Jiu, while Hugo Luz’s FC Vaslui beat Gaz Metan 1-0.

Jose Peseiro’s Rapid Bucharest are up to 7th thanks to a 1-0 win over Gloria Buzau - their third league win in a row, with Joao Paulo Andrade in Peseiro’s defence and Luis Dias, Diogo Ramos and Jorge Tavares. Francisco ‘Chico’ scored the equalising goal for Farul Constanta to earn them a 1-1 draw with FC Brasov, who had Paulo Adriano in their starting line-up. Nuno Diogo played in defence for Otopeni in their 2-2 draw at Universitatea Craiova.

Russia

Russian champions Zenit St Petersburg warmed up for their crucial Champions League tie with BATE Borisov by beating FC Khimki 1-0 at home. Portuguese international midfielder Danny scored the only goal on 16 minutes, making it three league goals this season for the former Sporting man. The result moved Zenit up into a UEFA Cup place, with three matches of the season remaining.

Scotland

Pedro Mendes played the full ninety minutes for Glasgow Rangers as they beat Inverness Caledonian Thistle 5-0 at Ibrox to remain three points behind leaders Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League. Bruno Aguiar started but was replaced ten minutes from time as Hearts lost 2-0 at home to Celtic. Filipe Morais did not play in Hibernian’s stalemate with St Mirren.

Serbia

Partizan Belgrade saw their lead at the top of the Serbian Super League cut to five points, after being held to a 1-1 draw at Hajduk Kula on Saturday. Almani Moreira started and played the full ninety minutes for Partizan, who travel to Germany and VFB Stuttgart in the Uefa Cup on Thursday.

Switzerland

Champions FC Basel played their fixture on Thursday night, ahead of next week’s Champions League commitments. Portuguese forward Carlitos was rested to the bench, but came on for the last fifteen minutes as Basel cruised to a 3-0 win over Sion. Bottom of the table FC Luzern got their first win of the season, with Nelson Ferreira playing from the start in a 1-0 win over Bellinzona.

Turkey

Fernando Meira’s Galatasaray are up to fifth place in the Turckell Super Lig, following a 3-1 victory, with the Portuguese in defence, over Gaziantepspor on Sunday evening. Elsewhere, another win for capital club Ankaraspor sees them remain in second place, although Neca was not involved in the 1-0 victory at Buraspor.

Ukraine

Metalurh Donetsk slipped down to 3rd place in the Ukrainian Premier League after a 1-0 loss to Vorskla Poltava on Sunday. Both Mario Sergio and Ricardo Fernandes played in the match for Matalurh, who are now eight points behind leaders Dynamo Kiev having started the season with six consecutive wins.

With four goals in his last two matches, Ronaldo is now starting to display the goalscoring form of last season. The Portuguese’s latest brace came as his Manchester United side made tough work of Hull City at Old Trafford, and Ronaldo now sits on 99 goals for the English club.
