Chelsea crash out of Carling Cup
Chelsea were the shock victims of the major upset in the fourth round of the English League Cup, after the Blues were knocked out by Championship side Burnley at Stamford Bridge. Both Paulo Ferreira and Deco started in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s team, although the latter was substituted at half time as Chelsea led through Didier Drogba’s 27th-minute strike.
With former Porto goalkeeper Hilario watching on from the substitutes bench, Chelsea saw their advantage cancelled out by Ade Akinbiyi. Extra time brought no further goals, but the visitors won the resulting penalty shootout 5-4 when goalkeeper Brian Jensen saved from John-Obi Mikel. Ferreira had been one of the Chelsea scorers in the shootout.
Manchester United are through to the last eight but, with Nani in the side, the Red Devils were made to work for a 1-0 win over Queens Park Rangers at Old Trafford. Meanwhile, Ricardo Rocha’s fortunes at Tottenham Hotspur could soon change, after the Portuguese was recalled from his exile at the London club to take a place on the bench as Harry Redknapp’s rejuvenated side beat Liverpool 4-2 at White Hart Lane.
There was an Arsenal debut for Amaury Bischoff, signed over the summer from Werder Bremen, in the Gunners’ 3-0 victory against Wigan Athletic. The 21-year-old was introduced for the final fifteen minutes, and was later joined by former Sporting academy striker Rui Fonte, 18, who made an 84th-minute appearance.

Real Madrid humbled
There was another huge shock in the Spanish Copa Del Rey, with Real Madrid crashing out to third-tier Real Union on away goals at the Bernabeu. The champions were without Pepe as they conceded a last-minute goal to earn a 4-3 victory on the night, but having lost the first leg 3-2 exit the competition on away goals.
Ricardo was handed a rare start while Nelson was given the night off as Real Betis completed a routine 4-0 aggregate win over Castellon with a 2-0 victory in Seville. Hugo Viana was taken off at half time as Valencia completed an aggregate 7-1 win over Portugalete with a 3-0 victory at the Mestalla. Both Simao and Maniche came on in the second half of Atletico Madrid’s disappointing 0-0 home draw with Orihuela, which saw Los Rojiblancos through thanks to a 1-0 win in the first leg.
Having drawn 1-1 in the first leg, Malaga travelled to Mallorca for their nicely poised second leg. Mallorca, without Jose Nunes, ran out 2-0 winners over Malaga, for whom Eliseu made an appearance on the hour. Deportivo rested Ze Castro for their 2-0 win over Elche, repeating their victory margin from the first leg.
Racing Santander overturned a 2-1 deficit from the first leg in their tie with Murcia, beating the second division side 2-0 at home without Ze Antonio or Jorge Goncalves. Recreativo Huelva, without Roberto Beto, beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 at home, but go out 4-3 on aggregate after a 2-0 first-leg defeat.
Others
Romania
There were two Portuguese on the score sheet as Jose Peseiro’s Rapid Bucharest were among the sides who booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Romanian cup with a 3-0 win over Arges. Joao Paulo Pinto and Ricardo Fernandes both found the net, while Joao Paulo Andrade was also in Peseiro’s starting line-up.
Gloria Bistrita, with Pedro Queiros and Diogo Ramos, beat FC Brasov, with Pedro Duarte and Paulo Adriano (who was sent off) 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw. There was a Portuguese on either side as Vaslui (Hugo Luz) won 2-1 at Otopeni (Nuno Diogo) while Mingote kept goal for Pandurii Targu-Jiu in their 4-1 success at Universitatea Craiova.
Carlos Milhazes was in the Poli Timisoara defence as his side lost 3-0 at Dinamo Bucharest, while Luis Dias, Diogo Silva, Miguel Russiano and Jorge Tavares all started Gloria Buzau’s 2-0 home defeat to Universitatea Craiova. There was a Portuguese on either side as Otopeni (Nuno Diogo) lost 2-0 at home to Vaslui (Hugo Luz) on Sunday.
Scotland
Rangers have drifted four points behind leaders Celtic at the top of the Scottish Premier League after the Glasgow club, with Pedro Mendes in midfield, were held to a 0-0 draw at Motherwell. There was better news for Bruno Aguiar, who played the full ninety minutes for Hearts in their 1-0 victory over Hamilton Academicals, which sees the Jambos up to fourth place.
Serbia
Almani Moreira scored twice in a three-minute spell in the first half as Serbian cup holders Partizan Belgrade advanced to the quarter-finals of this season’s competition with a 4-2 home win over Jagodina.
The former Boavista man put his team ahead on 33 minutes, before doubling Partizan’s lead a little over two minutes later. With an early eight-point lead in the Serbian Super Liga, Partizan are on-course to repeat their double-winning success from last season.
