England - Premier League

Ronaldo at the double

Cristiano Ronaldo reached his century of goals for Manchester United, getting two in the champions’ 5-0 win over Stoke City at Old Trafford on Saturday. Both of Ronaldo’s goals were from free-kicks, with the 23-year-old opening his account and reaching the 100-goal mark with a 3rd-minute effort, before rounding off the scoring with a second shortly before the end. Fellow Portuguese Nani watched the match from the substitutes bench.

Jose Bosingwa scored his second goal in English football as Chelsea stayed top of the Premiership with a comfortable 3-0 win at West Bromwich Albion. Former Porto right-back Bosingwa, who was joined in Luiz Felipe Scolari’s line-up by Deco and later by sub Paulo Ferreira, opened the scoring with a tremendous left-footed shot from distance. The game marked the first league appearance of the season for WBA’s Filipe Teixeira, with the winger coming off the bench just ahead of the hour for the Baggies.

Luis Boa Morte was not in the West Ham squad for their 0-0 draw at home with Portsmouth, while Ricardo Rocha did not earn a place on the Tottenham Hotspur bench as his side went down 2-1 at London rivals Fulham.

Quaresma dropped; Tiago on the up

Vitorino Antunes was taken off at half time in Lecce’s 3-2 defeat at Sampdoria, while Manuel da Costa was an unused substitute as Fiorentina lost 1-0 at Cagliari.

Spain - La Liga

Malaga duo on the mark

Portuguese duo Duda and Helder Rosario both scored Malaga’s goals in their 2-2 draw at home against Villarreal. Eliseu also started the match for Malaga, who twice had to come from behind, firstly through Duda’s 27th-minute strike and then with Rosario’s equaliser in the final second of normal time.

At the top of the table, Recreativo Huelva, with Roberto Beto in defence, were powerless to stop leaders Barcelona from winning 2-0 at the Nuevo Colombino, while champions Real Madrid missed Pepe as they went down 1-0 at Valladolid. Valencia also suffered a surprise defeat, with Miguel and Manuel Fernandes, who was substituted, starting in a 3-2 reverse to Sporting Gijon at the Mestalla.

Both Maniche and Simao Sabrosa started for Atletico Madrid as Los Rojiblancos beat Deportivo, who were without Ze Castro, 4-1 at the Vicente Calderon. Nelson was in the Real Betis side which beat Racing Santander 3-1 at home, although Jorge Goncalves and Ze Antonio were missing for Racing. Jose Nunes and Mallorca lost 2-1 at Almeria, while Tiago Gomes watched Osasuna’s 2-0 defeat at Athletic Bilbao from the bench.

Others

France

St Etienne suffered their sixth consecutive league defeat on Saturday with a demoralising 3-0 reverse at Lille. Les Verts, who have not won in Ligue 1 since their victory over Monaco on 5th October, selected Paulo Machado in their starting line-up, and the Portuguese played the full ninety minutes as his side stay in the relegation zone.

Greece

PAOK Saloniki, managed by Fernando Santos, were the losers in the weekend’s big game in Greece, as champions Olympiakos opened up a four-point lead at the top with a 2-0 win on Sunday evening. Sergio Conceicao played the full ninety minutes for Santos’ side, who remain in second place.

Edinho came on for the final twenty-five minutes of AEK Athens’ goalless draw with Panserraikos in the capital. In their first match since the departure of manager Carlos Carvalhal, Asteras Tripolis left their Portuguese contingent out as they drew 1-1 at Aris. Manuel Lopes played in Panthrakikos’ 0-0 home draw with Xanthi.

Romania

Unirea Urziceni are the new leaders of the Romanian league after a shock 1-0 victory over previous table toppers Dinamo Bucharest in the capital. Bruno Fernandes started the game in defence for Unirea, but was replaced at half time ahead of Marius Bilasco’s 58th-minute winner which sees them with a one-point advantage at the top.

Chico Fernandes earned Farul Constanta a point with a 65th minute equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Pandurii Targu-Jiu. Jose Peseiro’s Rapid Bucharest, with Ricardo Fernandes and Joao Paulo Andrade in the starting line-up and Joao Paulo coming off the bench, were held to a 0-0 draw at Universitatea Craiova.

There were three Portuguese involved for CFR Cluj as the champions beat Arges 2-0 to move into third place. Ricardo Cadu and Dani both started for Cluj, while Manuel Jose came on as a second-half substitute. Elsewhere, it was a frustrating weekend for Steaua Bucharest, who replaced Tiago Gomes at half time as they were held to a 2-2 home draw by Poli Timisoara. A miserable night for Gloria Buzau saw Luis Dias, Diogo Silva, Pedro Miguel, Miguel Falardo and Jorge Tavares all start in a 3-0 defeat at FC Vaslui, who were without Hugo Luz.

Russia

Zenit St Petersburg look set to finish the Russian season outside of the European places after a 1-1 draw with Dynamo Moscow on Saturday left them in 5th place heading into the final weekend. Portuguese midfielder Danny played for Zenit, picking up a booking along the way, as a 79th minute goal from Fatih Tekke earned the hosts a share of the spoils.

Scotland

Bruno Aguiar scored the only goal of the game for Hearts in their 1-0 victory at Inverness CT, scoring with a low left-footed drive from 15 metres to give the Edinburgh side all three points. Meanwhile, Pedro Mendes played the full ninety minutes in midfield for Rangers as two goals inside the first ten minutes proved enough for a 2-1 home win over St Mirren.

Serbia

Almani Moreira was again in amongst the goals for Partizan Belgrade, getting two as the champions ran out 4-0 winners at Napredak Krusevac. The former Boavista man got his team’s second and third goals, scoring on 27 minutes and then doubling his tally ten minutes later as Partizan maintained their eight-point advantage at the top of the table.

Switzerland

FC Basel are still top of the Swiss Super League after their top of the table clash with second place FC Zurich finished in a 1-1 draw at St Jakob Park. Former Benfica forward Carlitos started the game for Basel, but was replaced by Derdiyok with a little over twenty minutes left to play. Elsewhere, Joao Paiva came on for the final half hour as bottom-placed FC Luzern were hammered 6-1 at Young Boys Bern, with fellow Portuguese Nelson Ferreira luckily avoiding the match through injury.

Turkey

Galatasaray repaired some of the damage done by last weekend’s heavy defeat at Fenerbahce with a 2-0 home victory over Istanbulspor. Fernando Meira played in defence for Gala, who are five points off top spot and remain in sixth place in the Turkell Super Lig. Ankaraspor are still in third, after Neca’s side were held to a 0-0 draw at Kayserispor.

Ukraine

A good weekend for Metalurh Donetsk saw them move into second place and close the gap on leaders Dynamo Kiev to five points with a 1-0 win at Arsenal. Both Mario Sergio and Ricardo Fernandes started the match for Metalurh, who with just half of the season gone have already beaten their points record from the last campaign.
