Late Tiui brace fires Sporting to Portuguese Cup triumph

Sporting retained the Portuguese Cup after running out deserved victors against national champions FC Porto in the Jamor final yesterday.

Goalkeeper Nuno kept Porto level with a series of fine saves early on, before the match became a more tactical affair with extra time always looking likely, even after Porto’s Joao Paulo was sent off on 71 minutes. Enter Brazilian substitute Tiui for Sporting, whose two late goals sparked wild celebrations in the stadium and throughout Lisbon into the night. >>

Late onslaught sees Sporting win pulsating contest

Sporting 5-3 Benfica

Five goals in 22 second-half minutes gave Sporting a sensational Portuguese Cup semi-final win in a match that will be remembered for years by the fans of the Lisbon club.

Benfica dominated the first half and looked to be coasting with a comfortable and fully deserved 2-0 lead at the break, but the fun really started in the second half. Sporting played some irresistible attacking football to run out 5-3 winners.

Lucho Gonzalez celebrates goal

FC Porto made light work of Vitoria Setubal in the semi-final of the Portuguese Cup with a 3-0 away victory. The three time reigning Portuguese champions easily dispatched the Sadinos to book their spot at Jamor.

A Jorginho own goal and a brace by Lucho Gonzalez were enough to bring the Carlsberg Cup winners’ superb invincible run in cup competition this season crashing to an end. >>
