Benfica 2-0 Napoli - match reaction

Quique Flores, Benfica coach:

“We are very happy! It was a very difficult victory. Napoli stopped the game quite a bit. The players had a big game. The fans were entertained and this is also important.

“Whether we win or whether we lose, we always continue to build. It’s true that we are in a difficult phase because there are a lot of tough matches. The results are down to the players, who want to leave a pre-existing set of dynamics behind them and move onto the next step – being winners.

“Was the second half better than the first like against Sporting? I can guarantee that I do not perform magic during the interval. We give ourselves options, but it was the players who turned it around. The first half was good, with the exception of the last 10 minutes.

“Taking everything into account, it was a good game for Benfica. It’s the players who deserve the credit for the victories.”

Nuno Gomes, Benfica captain:

“No-one has any doubts that we deserved the victory. We scored two goals, but we could have scored more. Napoli in the first half managed to scare us twice, but in the second half we applied more pressure and had sufficient intelligence to turn the match in our favour.

“Personally, it is important for a striker to score goals, as it provides more confidence, but it was more important for the team, overall, because it killed off the game.”

Jose Antonio Reyes, Benfica forward:

“I am happy for the goal that I scored and for the team’s victory. We won the tie and that is more important. The team showed what they wanted.

“I have scored two decisive goals, but there is still a lot more work ahead. I am becoming more adapted to the team. Each day that passes, I am playing better. It’s been a long time since I felt this good.”

Maxi Pereira, Benfica right-back:

“It was a good victory. We always work towards improving. What’s most important was that we achieved a victory, which allows us to stay in the Uefa Cup. The coach has shown confidence in us and we have improved. This is not everything as there is still more to do in order for us to continue to do well on the pitch.

“Confidence is very important. We are trying to gain the confidence we lacked. Benfica are a candidate for everything because it is a big club. We will continue to work hard in order to improve.”
