Marcelo Carvalho's "Bifanas, Super Bock and Cristiano Ronaldo" report is interesting but I have one nagging question:

"at least off the pitch the Turks, who outnumbered the Portuguese in the streets of the city (Geneva)"

Where were you? That is near impossible. The Portuguese are literally EVERYWHERE in this city. The only place that doesn t say the portuguese presence was huge is a portuguese fan site.... Força Portugal

Germany and Poland come out of that group, Croatia look like crap. Simao is a better defensive option than Quaresma this is why he's out there. Quaresma is frustrating to watch.

PSousa did you watch Croatia today they almost got their butts handed to them by the absolute worst team.
The Czech's are one of the most technical teams in the tournie, they play a team game nothing flashy, and are known for getting results, especially in Euro. They are rarely considered a favourite but get consistent results, mainly through a TEAM game. You keep on looking for superstars, winners get team results not individual.
As for your selections mine were similar, and I would still love to see that line-up bar one.
Quaresma I would swap w/Simao because youre failing to see why Scolari has selected some of these players mainly cause they are good support players, & are unselfish. That is Simao's strength he passes, not that he beats every player not to mention he shoots well.
Also I am not Fereira's biggest fan but the challenges that he missed were because he had multiple defenders behind him so he pressured the man, made them commit, and then the D men behind him cleared it out easily. That is a team game, that is what Teams do, that is why CR has been having a tougher time, and Quar beats one just to have 3 guys behind them that he can't beat. It isn't all about one on one battles, because 1 vs 11 is a fools game. It is a team game and the smart ones pressure concede space so that they can sweep up easily.
It's not about the Stars it is about the TEAM.
Up until this point no Mgr had got them to play as a TEAM, Scolari just did and deserves credit for it.

Simao and Ferreira were the worst players on the pitch. Portugal was getting owned by Turkey on the left side the whole game. Were most of Turkey's chances came from. Quaresma should deff. be there instead of Nani. Nani is still too young and inexperienced. Quaresma does have somekind of experience in those situations.

I am telling you right now that against better defensive teams nuno gomes will disappear its what he does he doiesnt have the legs anymore..and why did simao do so well? because he wasnt physically MANHANDELD like he is against bigger teams he wont split those two players against germany(assuming we get to that point)like he did against turkey..simao is not the best option for that position you need another "gamebreaker" on the field to take the pressure of ronaldo..as for petit hes still on a game to game basis i think n he knows it thats why he played the way he did(notice meira coming in to play the midfield at the end)..and WTF was ricardo doing with those 2 volleys other than that he was solid but what was that all about..and the czech rep is still the better team? did you watch their game they had no imagination they coulodnt pressure in the last third the swiss hit the post a couple of time were robbed of at least 1 pen and the czechs are good?jon koller their "best player"now that rosickys out is 35 n showing it they dont attack nemore cause they dont have the players to do it effectivly(poborsy n nedved rnt walkin through that door and milan baros isnt playing out of his mind) lol n im the one who doesnt know the game..all we did was what we were supposed to do dont act like we just beat italy or spain all im saying is your backtracking pretty quickly..if you knew the game like you think you do after all those long winded explinations youd stick to your guns.

To end Man of Match controversy. Portugoal named Deco m.o.m. I disagreed as well as many others.

Sorry Melo, but Bosingwa and Simao were not brutal at all. Neither played their best game but neither cost their team a goal. I thought both played well. And no way will a coach in their right mind make four starting lineup changes unless they are desperate. Remember we won the game and are +2 in goal diff. Do not expect many changes going into Wed.

And props to O-Mac who manned-up and gave Scolari a compliment. No need to jump ugly PSousa. There are many fans who are critical of Scolari, thats what fans do. Heck, he wont even be our head coach come 6/30. Then Chelsea fans could criticise his lineups all they want.

I was very IMPRESSED!! the way portugal played. usually they dont play well versus the weaker teams, but vs turkey they showed some real TEAMWORK and thats what i like to see and waited for. i think that if portugal continues to play the way they play or even better they can go all the way.
the defense was awesome especially pepe and bosingwa. deco, simao and p.ferriera needs to work more.

I agree with Tony: Ferreira was rubbish and kept getting beat. The Czechs undoubtedly picked this up and will be able to exploit it better than the Turks. I would really like Scolari to try Miguel in left back. I remember he played there in one of the qualifiers and he looked very strong against Georgia. I haven't seen Ribeiro enough to comment.

I hope Scolari gives Almeida a chance against the Czechs, at least as a substitute. I know Nuno Gomes is more experienced but he is also sooo frustrating and misses so many chances.

Good comments on the game. At this point, I think you lock down and go with the starting 11. Certainly, you can make 1 or 2 adjustments as you go with the starting line up.

As far as Quaresma goes, I love his hi-lites films and he is very skillful but his holding the ball, outlandish shots on goal, and poor service make a him a candidate for a late game plug to provide some punch. As much as I don't like Simao, I think you go with Simao. Longer term, Nani appears to be the answer.

On Ferreira, his is probably the weakest link in the starting line up but I would not change things with Ribeiro. Maybe you could get Miguel on that side and that would be my preference. Trust me, Ribeiro might have a great left foot but he is a time bomb ready to go off. We currently have stop gap solutions but in a couple years, if he progresses well we have Antunes in the wings who could play there for 8-10 years.

On Nuno Gomes, I have been critical of him and have a hate/love relationship but he has done well in big games and we only need him to be decent for 5-6 games. He does play well with his back to the goal, I just hope he gets his shooting touch back. Maybe playing a few games and getting into a flow will help him get back some form.

The game on Wednesday will be a good test for us to assess how we've come along and if we need to tweak 1 or 2 players. I don't think Scolari will be a fraid to make a change or two as he has 2 players for each position.

The worst man on the pitch for Portugal was Paulo Ferriera. All of turkey's chances came through his side, and he does nothing offensively. Never liked ferriera and this is why. Overall though I liked how everyone played minus ferriera.

As for scary Croatia who were gifted goals by poor English keepers to get here and are missing one of the only truly exceptional players on their team (The brazilian Eduardo who scored 10 goals) is out for the tournament. Sure they have a couple of other decent players and like Turkey they are very sprited when they put on their national team jersey. The Czech's are a better team even without Roscinsky than Croatia although most pundits darkhorse is Croatia because they knocked out England. Being an English fan I will tell you that the Lions are in transition, with the new boss they should be a totally new team.

As for the confusion of Man of the Match, the TV Channel selected Deco but Carlsberg who is the sponsor for the tournament and is responsible with thee Man of the Match chose Pepe wisely. Although the English have some of the best commentators they are on SKY Sports and BBC, it is either I believe the ESPN feed is from Eurosport, which is lousy. Fortunately in Canada we can get RTPi but I watched our own Sportscastors handling the game on TSN and it was excellent, my other friends from around the globe did not say the same as they complained about the poor coverage.

PSousa clearly you have no concept of what is good.
I was commenting on past performances & humbly admitted my errors in the present.

As for Nuno Gomes not my first selection, if he never lost his marker than why did he hit the woodwork so many times? There is a saying in Ice Hockey if youre getting the chances then soon you will score, I too wouldn't mind Almeida up front but destroying the chemistry right now would not be good. Besides his linkup with Pepe got us the opening goal. Deco? what game were you watching? He was the worst on the field. You are right tho what we needed was Quaresma a ball hog who doesn't pass and only makes plays for himself & can't score, instead of a steady team player who was passing incredibly and winning corners all day for the team (Simao). Have some more Porto punch dude, the blue coloured glasses aren't enough.
Weakest group that is Germany's, and in the Euro's there is no weak group that is what makes it the toughest tournament on the planet, because of the quality you face game in game out.
At least I can admit my errors you are just oblivious to all of yours, probably because you have no understanding of the game.
The TEAM game you saw today with timely early balls, and tons of passing and defensive coverage off of the ball is what wins you trophies, not some dingbat taking 10 mins to beat one defender one on one, allowing the whole other team the time to get behind the ball.
As you could see Nani was the next man in line.

Wasn't Pepe man of the match? As for Deco he was a bit careless with the ball in the game. However his long ball to Simao was ridiculous, he makes great passes and stretches the field on a regular basis I think that goes unappreciated.

wait excuse me too all you Nuno Gomes haters???WTF are you people RETARDED he was AWEFUL...he hit the post twice??? im supposed to be impressed the point is to get the ball IN the net not ALMOST...He can never lose whoever is marking him he misses great opportunity after great opportunity HE CAN NOT PLAY BY HIMSELF he needs another forward with him and we dont have the kind of foward that can run onto balls that he holds up because if theres one thing hes good at is playing with his back to goal other than that hes average or at this stage in his career mediocre.Nevermind the fact that turkey have the weakest D in our group...Paolo Ferreira was ALSO terrible getting beat CONSTANTLY at point they stopped going to the right side cause they couldnt do anything with BOS...seems to me like we prob ended up with the easiest group...Simao needs to also be replaced by Quaresma....Nuno Gomes by Almeida...and give jorge ribeiro a chance he cant be worse than ferreira.............AND finally OrlandoMac because you state that you like what scolari did and you like the team makes your opinions and statements look foolish now maybe you should relax with SLAMMING people who have only succeded (Scolari,Deco just to name 2)and done well for us....If we beat the Czechs which i think we will than the Swiss will get second...Lets hope we dont have to play Croatia in the next round and somehow get Poland again so we can get some revenge and play the weaker oppostion before facing Germany

(thanks to O-mac. I had posted this in wrong section.)

Hey guys. i dont mean to double post but was just checking in to see if anyone had posted their thoughts on game. I have to say i really disagree with Portugoal's man of match. Did I watch same game? Deco was anything but magical! Maybe he was confused with Moutinho who played a great game with his pace and speed. Pepe of course was dominant at times on defense and essentially scored twice. Some other quick grades:
Ronaldo- B+. So close so many times. Expect a multi goal game very soon.
Gomes- B-. Would have been a C if it werent for give and go pass to set up Pepe's goal. He needs to finish.
Deco- B-. I really didnt find one magical play, and I watched game twice. In fact everytime he touched the ball he seemed to give it away.
    Moutinho- A.
Pepe- A. Sometimes dominant, joined play effectively.
Bosingwa - A-. Could've done better on some early runs, but stellar defending.
Ricardo- B+. Did what he needed to. His happy feet worry me, though.
Nani- B+. Nice energy and pace. I would like to see him start, but great role as a super sub.
Simao- B+. Some nice corners. Couldve done better with earlier free kick. Overall solid performance.
Petit- B+. No mistakes. Physical force.
Scolari- A-. Made correct substitution for Gomes at right time. Meireles scores minutes after getting in. Would like to see Quaresma soon.

Portugal played so good today. I was proud of our national team. They dominated Turkey on and off the ball. PORTUGAL PLAYED AS A TEAM. This team could win Euro 08. This team is way better then the WC 06 team. I think Simao can play better. He won 6 corners because he was too slow servicing the ball into the box. But he hustled all game. I don't think Nani should of been playing in that situation put a Miguel Veloso or Quaresma in. Quaresma being more experienced or going defensively with Miguel Veloso. But i don't mind we played great and dominated the game and beat Turkey. I watched Switz and Czech...sloppy and weak teams. Portugal will win all there group games if they played like they did against Turkey. Getting back to the comparison of the WC 06 squad and Euro 08 squad.

Were a diffrent team. Much younger at the back. Nuno Valente Jeesh so slow getting the ball up the field- Paulo Fereira isn't that much better but he is faster. Mentioning who slowed up the attack in 06 Maniche, Costinha, Nuno Valente, Meira, and Pauleta.

Pepe brings a whole different dimension to Portugal's game than Meira does. Moutinho controls the midfield with Deco even though he gives the ball away carelessly. Ronaldo and Simao (who can play better) and Nuno Gomes who shut up all his critics (including me) hitting the bar 2 times and setting a goal up. I think Ronaldo is more mature and much better than when he played in WC 06.

Portugal played an outstanding game against Turkey. They, pretty much, did everything right. Portugal shut Turkey down and made them look pretty ordinary. I really enjoyed the back four as they were tight and acted like a unit, as did the rest of the team. Pepe's run was totally unexpected, but I like the fact that other players scored, taking the burden off of Ronaldo and giving other teams something to worry about. I thought Moutinho was really good. He showed maturity and poise. If the team continues playing this way, I can't see why they can't beat anyone.
    FORCA PORUGAL!!!!

I never had any doubts about Scolari get them to play as a Team. And i also think he has something up his sleeve,as he was seen by some journalists training Cristiano as a center forward. In fact when Nuno Gomes came out and Nani got in, i thought that it was going to happen, let's wait and see...I dont know why Deco was chosen to be the man of the match,he's getting back to his old self, but he's not there yet!
I thought Bosingwa and Pepe were really good and Cristiano and Nuno were unlucky to hit the wood work but it's gonna happen for them,i can feel it!I was so excited yesterday with the way the game was flowing,it remind me of the team we had in EURO 2000.Can't wait for for the next match...

Where all those 7's coming from? This had to be the best performance EVER for Portugal as a TEAM.

They smothered Turkey who are a counter attack team & frustrated them to shoot long range or attempt poor tackles to get the ball.
Turkey is an great team I expect them to still do damage in this tournie.

All credit goes to Scolari because I never thought he would get these guys to play like a TEAM, and he has.
The weakest one on the park was Deco, but he was solid defensively and only hurt us offensively occassionaly, which we can live with. Petit was not all over the pitch, he was exactly where he should be, in position, great performance from him.

    Ricardo 8
    Bosingwa 9
    Pepe 10
    Carvalho 10
    Ferreira 9
    Petit 9
    Moutinho 10
    Deco 8
    Simao 9
    Ronaldo 9
    Numo Gomes 8

The D were unbeatable in the back, never really pressured in close.

As for those that thought Ronaldo had a bad game, he played the most mature game I've ever seen, he was double and triple marked and even though he was frustrated passing the ball away all the time, he was a TEAM player and did so to our success. That game could have easily been 4 or 5-0 if not for a solid performance by the Turks defensively. They kept the pressure on through ball control & frustrated the opposition into errors.

Scolari gets an 11, and for those that have tuned in for a long time know that I am not a fan of his squad selection, no one should be moved at the moment as the chemistry is perfect.
    Forca Portugal

Good and encouraging start after today's performance and result. Finally Portugal started to look like Portugal and showed some fluent quality. Best game Portugal has played in 2 years! Having a set line up, healthy players, and some good training helped get things back on course.

All reason for cautious optimism! Portugal needs to continue to improve by better finishing and eliminate some bad passes that lead to some dangerous counter attacks. Scolari stated that the team finally played like what he has been expecting of Portugal and that they are at only 50% of the way.

I know the Czech Republic didn't look good today and they don't have the quality like a few years back but they are dangerous with a great goalkeeper who can keep them in the game. They will sit back and counter attack looking for that one opportunity (remember 96). We must guard against defensive lapses and crosses where we are vunerable. Nothing is certain but I like our chances in this game if continue to improve.

Really impressed with Portugal today, Pepe was outstanding, Deco delivered some dangerous long balls, Petit was all over the field. Turkey looked overwhelmed. I also watched the swiss and czech's go at they both looked terrible and based on our performance today we should cruise into the quarterfinals.
  • Costinha, Silva, Portugal

I don't understand why everyone is praising Deco. He was a half step behind today. He also kept passing into the opposition which led to a couple counter attacks. But i must say he had a couple dangerous passes and plays that showed what he can do but he has to start doing more of that if he hopes to get farther in this tournament.

Portugal seems better on paper, but never take Turks lightly. I'm watching Turkish football a lot cuz of my close Turkish friends. I can say that Turks lack one thing, and that is "fear". I'm sure you all know Nihat, Tuncay, Altintop etc. But their most talented player is Turan, who's a LW mostly. He's 21. I advise you to watch him closely as he's a great dribbler. He can fool anyone on the pitch. His only disadvantage is physique. He's not as fast or strong as CR, but I can say he can fool CR too. His dribbling skills is a lot better than CR, but as I said before he's slow on open pitch. There's no way to defend Arda Turan with a single player if he's on his day.

I wish good luck to Portugal, but I can smell a goalled draw here.

I expect to see a few goals tonight from both teams. With Portugal winning what will prove to be a tough match.I also expect the Turkish going for Cristiano's legs other than the ball. It's usually like that, once they realise they cant keep up with him they will get frustrated and try to injure him like Boularouz did in 2006.I'm proud of our fighting spirit but a repeat of "Nuremberg" would be too much to bare on a opening match.Hopefully it wont go that way...Now it's time to wish our Selecção the best of luck! And let this show begin...

On paper, the players for Portugal are more highly regarded players -- no dispute. The reality is Portugal is in transition and has not played well in the past 2 years except for a few games.

Hopefully, Portugal will settle down and start to play well and peak in the tournament. There are many examples from history of teams peaking at tournaments. Some key things I'll be looking at that will help decide the game.

    1) I expect Turkey to come aggressively against Ferreira on the left side and Pepe or Alves in the center. Pepe has been vunerable at times this year at Real Madrid. Fepe/Alves and Paul F need to be solid. Turkey has some good attacking players (better stikers than us)

    2) Petit must compete in midfield and win balls. He tends to get out of position, give up gaps, and make dumb fouls to give up set pieces.
    3) Most of the goals Portugal gives up are due to counter attacks with the defense out of position and from set piece crosses where Ricardo is weak and the marking is poor -- crosses unsettle Portugal. Watch if Turkey attacks with crosses.
    4) Turkey will try to reduce the space for CR and put the game on Deco, Simao, and Gomes. CR will get some chances but will he have enough space to do his magic?
5)Try to hit Turkey earlier and give them no confidence.

Conclusion, I don't think Turkey will win but I would not be surpised if this goes 1-1 as both teams will play the game tight. I hope I'm wrong and we have a breakout game.

Yeah the dirty dutch tried that tatic and succeeded, taking out Ronaldo should be included in any team's game plan he's the best player in the world. Also Portugal is not one player, that's the most ridiculous comment I've ever seen posted on these walls. Our bench would make a better team that Turkey's starting 11. However, talent isn't the end all to winning a tournament just ask the Greeks about that.

One added note on tomorrow's match, Turkey are not very good away from home. Look at their qualifying record, just one win. I'm not saying this will make it any easier for Portugal, but if they get the first goal, Turkey might get nervous. Also, watch for players to intentionally try and take out Ronaldo.

For you gentlmen who think Portugal is only one player you clearly don't watch many of these players. Turkey is a good team very spirited and headstrong but they would trade almost all of them for one of our key players, and still have enough money left over to fill the reserve team.
One too many Turkish delights, boys.
This is a tough match which we could surely lose, but I see it 2-1.

Portugal are notorious slow starters so I'll say a 1-1 tie with turkey.

I would like to look portugal improvement from their defence till the attacking skill..this is quite tough game.i know how tough dan robust they are..cech rep, turkey also switzerland..
ok about the match between turkey..the player that must be watched every single seconds is altintop and nihat..very sharp in attacking.. so,i would like to see more aggresive and sharp portuguese player in passing n also attacking..also cannot forget about the defensive task..so i hope our support and luck could give us a victory against turkey..so forca portugal..!!

Portugal won't win this one 1-0, with the attack of Turkey it will be difficult to keep them away from are goal, they will score!
    Believe me!

    Portugal will win it 2-1.
We won't score more then 2 goals this game,Portugal aren't a big scoring team if we can't beat georgia by more then 2 goals then we will have trouble getting 1 past turkey!

I believe it will be 2-1 for Portugal in the end watch for a key moment like a penalty or freekick to happen!

    Forca Portugal!

we can't lose, a loss here will make it difficult for us to advance. I think we win 2-1 as well.

this is gonna be a tough first match. Clearly their defense is their weak point. However their offense is quit impressiv. I hope for a 2-1 win!
    Forca Portugal

Portugal undoubtedly will win. A fast start will be our fortune. Turkey will try to rally late, but a 2-0 VICTORY will be ours. Ronaldo and substitute Hugo Almeida score.

Portugal will not have it easy. I think Turkey will make it out of the group, hopefully, along with Portugal. The Turks have fire power with Nihat Kahveci and Hamit Altintop. If Portugal give those two any space, it can be lethal. I say watch for a high score, 3-2 Portugal.

I'm bricking it to be fair about this Saturday! Turkey are going to be tough, let's make no mistake about that! remember the South Korea and Greece opening games??!! Portugal MUST shine on this occassion and I don't care if we don't win it, as long as we meet Greece somewhere along the line and finally get our revenge! It's long over due and they are sh**! We need to prove that! Forca Portugal..mmm such a shame England won't be there ...NOT!!! :o)
