Rui Bento appointed new Beira-Mar coach

Former Portugal international takes hot seat at Aveiro

Rui BentoBeira-Mar emblemBeira-Mar have wasted no time in filling the vacant head coach’s position at the club. Rui Bento relinquishes his position as coach of Portugal’s U16 team to sign a contract for the alvi-negros until the end of the 2011/12 season.

Bento takes over from Leonardo Jardim, who resigned earlier this week.

Bento, 39, a former Portugal international, started his coaching career at Academica de Viseu in 2004/05, and also managed Barreirense, Penafiel and Boavista before taking up his post at the Portuguese football federation upon invitation from Carlos Queiroz.

In a distinguished playing career midfielder Bento shined especially brightly at both Boavista and Sporting. Curiously, Bento’s first match in charge will be at the Alvalade on Sunday as Beira-Mar lock horns with Sporting.

The rest of the coaching team comprises Jorge Neves (assistant), Jerome Palatsi (goalkeeper coach) and Sergio Gaminha (physio).
