Benfica reject Chelsea bid for David Luiz - report

Defender delighted with Brazil chance

Benfica have reportedly rejected a €32m bid from Chelsea for David Luiz, as the defender was handed his first international call-up by new Brazil coach Mano Menenzes.

Menezes named a 24-man squad for his first match in charge of the South American champions against USA next month, and there were several call-ups for Brazil’s next generation. Along with the likes of Rafael (Manchester United) and Santos duo Neymar and Ganso, Benfica’s David Luiz was also included in the group.

“I am very happy and excited with this call,” he told the club’s official website. “It was a goal and a dream in my life. I’ll make the most of this opportunity.”

It appears increasingly likely that Luiz will still be a Benfica player when he makes his international bow, with Benfica apparently determined to retain his services for the new campaign in the face of interest from English clubs Manchester City and Chelsea.

According to Record, the Eagles have rejected an offer in the region of €32m from Chelsea for the 23-year-old. Previously, Man City had made an approach worth €35m, with a €3m annual salary for Luiz, but were also turned down by Benfica, who refuse to negotiate below their reported €40m valuation.

Meanwhile, Ramires, who was also called into the latest Brazil squad, is expected back in Lisbon today after enjoying some time off following the World Cup. Unlike Luiz, the midfielder is still expected to leave the Estadio da Luz in the near future, with Chelsea remaining his most likely destination.

Benfica has to be crazy not to take that money gladly. They wont see another offer like that again. Once he gets to the champions league and faces even better strikers, his value would only decline. You see other central defenders like Pepe (30m) and now Bruno Alves (23m reportedly) that are better than David Luiz going for less within the past years. If I were Benfica I would have provided transportation for David Luiz to get to SB...
Benfica is mad not to sell for $32M

I'm glad David is staying at the "Catedral."
Remember it is only a buyout clause. that's all it is.
Messi's is 250million euros, CRon's is 1.4billion euros......are they worth it? NO.

If a team wants to pay 250mil for messi, then Barca can't stop him from going. BUT with 250mil, Barca could buy 2 full squads. lol
Benfica did the right thing

Some of these EPL fans don't understand some clubs try to get the biggest bid they can get and we know teams like Man City, Chelsea or whoever are dumb enough to bid higher.

Now 32 million euros is alot of money don't get me wrong but Benfica is also trying to save their new season he was our best central defender of last year and going into the Champions League can even make his value higher, so I'm glad that he's staying at least one more year.
The numbers make sense

I think his valuation should be in the thirty mil range. He's young and proven to be consistent. Obviously its a gamble for Cleasea but look at the reports for Baloteli and compare. That Guy is a total cancer and he hasn't done anything yet.
Anyway, I think that the reports are false and that Vieira would not turn down that amount of cash.
ManCity & Chelsea can bugger off

Some of you guys don’t seem to understand what’s really going on. David has a buyout of 50million, not because Benfica see that as his value, it’s that they don’t want to sell. Porto has done the same thing with Hulk by putting a ridiculous buyout. I’m thrilled to see our teams are building strong squads to compete in Europe and putting measures in place to prevent teams no name teams bought by billionaires to steal our talent. I hope they continue this focus since it will help increase our leagues overall strength.

This is perfect, with Luiz finally being called up for Brasil, hopefully this will convince him that he can play for Benfica and still get into Brasil squads, just as Ramires and Luisao did last season! Hopefully this will make him decide to stay at least another season, because we've got no real quality cover in defence if he would go!
IT IS A BIG FAT LIE!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me state that I'm a Benfiquista.
That being said, I am shocked that Benfica wouldn't have sold Luiz for anything over 25 mil, nevermind 30 mil. I for one, am thrilled that Luiz is staying since our backline has no real backups and needed to stay intact. Peixoto apparently is always hurt, Sidney showed inadiquate last season, Faria is new to the squad, and Amorin is really a midfielder.

With the backline staying, it will also provide Jesus with options. If he feels Faria is up to the task, he can slide Luiz to the left and move Coentrao to his natural position as left mid, should Gaitan or anyone else fails to solidify the spot. I feel that Coentrao could work well with Luiz on that side. Then again vs Monoco, Coentrao had a beautiful give a go with Gaitan that led to Cardozo's goal.

I'm not sure where the money is coming from, but I really want to see this squad preform in the Champions League. We just might get a favorable group and then anything can happen with the draws.
I also feel that this seasons Portuguese campaign will be much tougher. Porto will take over Braga's role last season and Sporting has to be better, no?

yeah they have upped the price of luiz,,it shows that they are really afraid of losing luiz,,they dont want to release him...because they really count on him in CB..like arsenal do with fabregas,,that is disgusting price...yeah this is the way benfica 'protect' their key player by increasing the price of the player...who's david luiz??he's not fabregas,,he's not david villa,he's not kaka and so on...the price absloutely doesn't make any sense..benfica sucks!!

Really i would never understand this sort of club,i mean luiz is good but 32m euros for a player they bought for 4 or 8m euros you must be mad to turn down such an offer.

The problem for them is that he soon could be found out in the champions league as he has never had to play against major quality strikers and then his fee would surely go down and they will regret not taking these offers from city and chelsea.
Ridiculous

Why the hell would Chelsea want to spend €32m on a 23 year old Brazilian center back is beyond me. The same player was rumored to be worth in the region of €14m to €16m in January.

Goddamned Manchester City with their bulging pockets have ruined the transfer market for every club.
I'm not so sure for this story

Chelsea are serious about business now than getting player in a crazy transfer bill or wages moreover they are care about their academy right now, they also have player at this position at their academy, player like Machinni, Bruma, Van Hanot, Hodson there which can easily promote to this position without problem by back up of experience player like JT, Alex, I'm not think chelsea going to pay this amount for a young defender again is only MAn City can do it now baby, this is totally rumor
