No secret to success - David Luiz

Defender just thankful for chance to play football

davidluiz_celebrating.jpgAfter having sat out for a large portion of his career due to a toe injury, Benfica's David Luiz has repaid the faith and patience shown in him as the classy central defender has won the adulation of the club's supporters everywhere.

Luiz has become one of the most adored players in the Benfica roster as his dogmatic approach to the game and the gratitude he demonstrates towards the club and their fans has earned him cult status.

The humble 22-year-old is appreciative of all the attention he has received and continues to attritbute his success to the club and the Benfica faithful.

"There aren’t many secrets (to my success). To be worthy of wearing the Benfica shirt, the players just have to respect the fans and the club,” the Brazilian told FIFA.com. "Age is not much of a factor. You can seem young at 34 and mature at 20. For my age, I think I’ve found a good balance."

"I’ve grown up a lot since I came to Europe. I enjoy what I do and I’ve got a huge amount of respect for the club members (socios) and fans that cheer us on at the stadium every week.”

“A player has to realise that fans have the right to be demanding and so we must give everything we've got, in every single game. Only then we can start talking about individual ability.”

“I’m a central defender, and that’s the position I feel most comfortable in, but I’d play in net or as a striker if I had to. I can only be grateful for having the privilege to do a job I love.”
