Defiant FC Porto rally round Hulk

Squad condemn “injustice” and promise victories

Porto rally round HulkIn a remarkable show of solidarity, the entire FC Porto squad appeared in the Auditorium of the Estadio do Dragao to issue a strongly worded statement in replacement of the usual pre-match press conference ahead of tomorrow’s crunch clash against Braga.

It was the manner chosen by the team-mates of Hulk and Sapunaru to show solidarity for the players who have been suspended for four months and six months respectively because of the punch-up with stewards in the tunnel after the Benfica v Porto match on 20 December.

Veteran goalkeeper Nuno, flanked by the rest of the squad, was the spokesman for the players and read out the following statement:

“The last time we were all together here it was a moment of joy and honour and a feeling of mission accomplished as we celebrated clinching our fourth straight championship.

Unfortunately, today we cannot be the same. We are disgusted and revolted with the occurrences in Portuguese football. What has happened recently has hurt us all. It has hurt Hulk and Sapunaru personally, and we want to show our solidarity towards them.

There is nobody, absolutely nobody, who can sway us from our path or make us give up our goal. We are Tetra-champions! We deserve respect for what we have conquered and we are going to win again. Together, always together, we are going to win again.

There is nobody – I repeat, nobody – no injustice that will take away our union. With every passing day, every training session and every game we are more united!

Finally I would like to leave a message to our supporters: the Board, the staff, the players and everybody who likes FC Porto continues and will continue to be FC Porto. We are going to win and we will win more and more! We are FC Porto and we are united! Don’t forget that. It’s our message to the whole country because of the indignation we feel.”

Video - A lot to do about nothing really
25 Tuesday, 23 February 2010 18:07

Have you seen the video? Check it out first and then consider the following points:

1. It was outside public view. Therefore the setting the example argument is not valid. Should the disciplinary committee of the ligue fine a player if he has a fight in a night club? No, its a police and his employer (his club) to decide what to do.
2. That was more a heated argument then a fight
3. 4 months is what Cantona got from the FA for his kick on a Crystal Palace fan . This was DURING the game. He did have to do community service, etc too, but that was a Police decision, not the FA.

Basically, 4 and 6 months for THAT is a joke.
THANK YOU DAN

Thank you for bringing some sense into this argument it couldn't have been said any better...It seems like benfica fans always act like they know what they are talking about when in fact they read the headline and skipped the entire article...I mean I saw some benfica fan post on this site that porto only wins with foreign players LOLOL....another example of benfiquista idiocy? CHECK OUT THE BENFICA WIKI PAGE LOL....under eras they have "the ressurgance under jorge jesus" lololol resurgance? Lol halfway through the season and already its a new era...just wreaks of desperation....

When will the talk of corruption stop? What was found in the porto and boavista cases very different, hence the difference in punishment...if anyone is going to talk of corruption, let him quote from court evidence or similar, not freakin youtube.if ur gonna talk bout the 6 point deduction, find out from the court findings what the deduction was for and quote those here....till someone does that ur all just talkin from word of mouth and rumours, what uv heard on sites like this and from friends.forca porto, vamos lutar ate ao fim!!!
Thank you Oliver

For proving my point that this site needs a better filtering system when it comes to posts. What does anything I wrote have to do with you? Why are you getting involved? Are you with the site? You've probably posted more than everyone combined in the last 2-3 days, but have offered nothing. Also, what light on Tuesday are you talking about?

Look son, I'm sorry that you're the son of divorced parents and instead of affection, they opted to get a you a laptop with an internet package. Maybe, if you didn't bottle up your feelings of anger towards them, you'd see you'd be better off. I'm sure there are plenty of great therapists in Berlin, or wherever the hell you're from, who can help you.

Dan - Porto & London
The story is getting people confused it seems, mostly pro Benfica fans who are known to be bitter and confused individuals at the best of times. The issue here is that FC Porto nor any team should have to wait such a massive amount of time for a disciplinary decision to be made. The Liga have acted like amateurs, they should have handed out the punishment within a week, perhaps max. time limit two weeks.

Also worth noting is that Benfica are not blameless in this issue, it was also demonstrated that they have fault in the issue and this is why they have been handed a fine. The video footage (have many of you even seen it??) doesn't show anything particularly shoking and I would have quite easily handed out a fine to the players and staff involved and perhaps given the players something more akin to a 6 to 8 game ban as this would have been ample discipline when compared to what has taken place, which is nothing more and nothing less than unprofessional conduct from Both FC Porto and SL Benfica staff.

So the spin off it appears here is some sort of cry for Porto getting their comeuppance, well they have gotten their comeuppance, years of hard work and years of being the underdog's they finally broke the real corruption that had taken a hold of Portuguese football and have established themselves as a serious football club. the only reason this upsets so many people is because approx. %60 of the nation supports Benfica, they were used to controlling everything with Sporting being a close second, now that this cycle has been broken everyone is up in arms, i'm not suprised, Benfica and indeed the Lisbon Mafioso had been used to dominating football in Portugal and had even been used to having the government break the law for them.

Are we likely to hear complaints from Benfica fans when their club gets bailed out by the government for the millions they owed in tax's and got away with giving up some shares instead, no of course not.

Let's just face one fact, for Porto to break the Southern bias towards the Lisbon clubs they had to fight fire with fire, Once they had broken the spell they progressed simply by being the better organized club. If it could be proved that Pinto da Costa had actually bribed anyone there would be no escaping punishment from either the Liga or Uefa, the fact is most 'evidence' is sketchy to say the least and most of the times outrageously libellous, for example a lot of so called evidence came from a bitter ex-wife.

At the end of the day FC Porto's stability and organization is what has seen our success, not bribing ref's. Befica's inability to keep a manager or President for longer than 5mins is what is their real downfall. If you actually look at the games Porto where accused of bribing the Ref we drew one game and had a penalty maked against us (hardly the actions of a bribed ref) and the other was a rather un remarkable 1-0 win.

Final point has got to be, i'm more than Happy for Benfica and their fans to focus on things like this instead of whats happening on the pitch, because it's Porto's ability to do this that has meant we have become the far more successful club in Portuguese and European history and things are only going to get better for FC Porto.

It's one thing to insult and poke fun of players, coaches and teams, but to allow someone to insult a nationality?

Out of all the posters and readers here, only Canadians were singled out. For the individual who did it, and we all know who you are, dude, whatever.

For the site, is there no filtering system, so this is how it's going to be? Hats off to a second-rate site.

... will go away in May when the final points are tallied. Remember Johnny, Benfica still has to go Porto.

I've seen this movie before and I know how it ends. Benfica jumps out to the early lead, Benfica fan starts thumping his chest. May comes around, and Porto finishes in first.

Benfica fan is the Jets fan of the Portuguese Liga.

Hey man, don't go making assumptions when you don't know the full story. Boavista and Porto were both punished according to the proof that the police had (as we all know the phone lines were tapped) Proof was found that Boavista had done enough match fixing significantly enough for them to be demoted. On the other hand, Porto was only found guilty in 6 points worth of match fixing... We who live in Portugal know what's going on here, don't try manipulate us.
To everyone else: just because Pinto da Costa perfmormed match fixing recently it doesn't mean he's done that for 25 years... Remember people, jealousy makes you nasty.

Boavista & Porto were caught for the exact same corruption but the only reason why Boavista went down and Porto didn't it's probably because if Porto went down it would hurt the Portuguese Liga alot. Portugal is already in a economic crisis and it would ruin the biggest rivalry in Portugal. As much as Porto deserves to be down I have to say sadly it will never happen because the Portuguese Football Federation is too soft and UEFA are a bunch of dumbasses probably just as dumb as people in FIFA. If Porto thinks this is bad believe it's only a slap on the wrist.
Take note below...

anyone who saw the video knows it's worth a small fine and nothing more. it looks like a bunch of pushing and shoving going on in a group of 20 people, yet they single out hulk and sapunaru. the video doesn't even show how it got started, for all we know the steward could've been the aggressor.

wouldn't you guys just love porto in the second division... yeh i would too if my team sucked. keep bitching like little girls.

in a rebuilding year that we sold 3 stars to french teams and had our star striker suspended for no reason we're still in the race, and playing well in the champions league. that's a quality team/organization. and we would actually be tied for first if a few clean goals weren't wrongfully called offsides.

Is this for real? If there was any other indication that this club bites big ones, well here it is.

"Hey, let's assault non-threatening stewards and corrupt the league for the last 25 years, but still claim that we're victims."

Shame on you and this site for posting this tripe! Where was this site when the youtube leaks came out? Always taking about Porto being so strong despite everyone knowing the truth about their corrupt ways in Portuguese football.

By standing behind violence you can see why Porto have fans who attacked that store Ronaldo's sister was taking care after Porto lost to him. It disgusting that this team promotes these actions. This is not south america, you cannot fight in our games and act higher then everyone else.

Given their lack of respect for the league, these new videos showing them bribing officials would be a good opportunity to give a true punishment. As some other posters stated, bribing is an instant drop to the seconded division anywhere in the world.

Weren't these two players actions bad enough an example to their fans, especially the young, without having the rest of the team try and excuse it?

Who cares how many times Porto have been champions, it has nothing to do with these instances. The players are clearly deluded if they think having been successful can excuse violence on or off the pitch.

Instead of asking, no, demanding respect, they should instead show football fans some respect, accept the rulings and keep quiet.

What a lot of nonsense. Clearly these four championships mean that it's okay for these two players to attack and beat up innocent stewards at an opponent's ground. Perhaps the squad should be united in their condemnation of the violence perpetrated by their thug colleagues.

Injustice??

Ha-ha-ha!!!! Bye Bye Porto, show solidarity with your team all you want.......clearly you follow the lead of your CORRUPT president Pinto Da Costa. How is video evidence an injustice?...as suggested by many on this very website, the proper suspension should have been a ban for remainder of season and serious probation for the next year at least for those two clowns. As for the rest of the team to stand by them just shows the type of morons that play for this sad excuse of a club. Its actually a shame that the rest of the league didn't stand together like this when Porto were found of corruption in officiating bribes (six point deduction???) now that is an injustice!!! They should have been sent to the 2nd division like Boavista and stripped of all of their 12 titles in the last 15 years, because as far as I am concerned, they were all won through bribes, or through great teams put together from the money earned by being in the CL from all those years they bribed their way to dominance. Payback is often unpleasant, and history is finally catching up to Porto. Those titles truly belong to the 2nd place teams of all those years, which would be about 8 for Sporting and about 4 for Benfica. Unfortunately, the Portuguese league doesn't have the gonads like the Italian league to send one of its big clubs to its deserved destination of the 2nd tier (2a Divisao). Nevertheless, it would seem that their era of dominance/corruption is crashing down to its demise and to that I say, "Finally, justice is being served" ;-)
