Maritimo opt for Mitchell Van der Gaag

“Flying Dutchman” appointed head coach

Mitchell Van der GaagMitchell Van der Gaag has been appointed full-time coach of Maritimo. Van der Gaag took over on a temporary basis after former boss Carlos Carvalhal was sacked two weeks ago. He won his only game in charge so far, steering the islanders to a 4-2 victory over Academica.

The former centre-back is a club hero in Madeira. He arrived at Maritimo in 2001, signing from Utrech, and was a mainstay at the heart of defence for years. He played a total of 218 matches, scoring 17 goals, and became known as “the flying Dutchman”.

After hanging up his boots he took on the coaching position of the Maritimo B team. His promotion to the senior head coach makes the 37-year-old the only foreign coach currently working in the Liga Sagres.

Van der Gaag’s first mission as the full-time manager will be to negotiate a tricky-looking Portuguese Cup tie, away to Azorean team Santa Clara next Sunday.
