Almani Moreira picks up Partizan Belgrade Player of the Year award

Portuguese midfielder set to extend contract

MoreiraFans of Serbian champions Partizan Belgrade have voted Portuguese midfielder Almani Moreira as the club Player of the Year for 2008.

The 30-year-old, who is known affectionately as ‘Doctor Mo’ by Partizan’s fans, was the clear winner of the award, scooping almost 35% of the votes on the club’s official website, with Lamine Diarra finishing as runner-up with 15%.

In honour of the award, Partizan organised a press conference where General Secretary Darko Grubor issued Moreira with a gold medallion, as well as a brand new Samsung mobile phone model from Roaming Electronics.

“This award represents a great acknowledgement and honour for me,” Moreira explained at the press conference. “At the same time, this award strengthens my responsibility towards Partizan supporters. Opinion and judgements of Partizan fans are particularly important for me. Thanks a lot to those who voted me. Regardless of it, the trophies I want this season with my club are more valuable.”

Interview: Moreira tells of delight and ambition

Moreira has been at the Partizan Stadium since the summer of 2007, having struggled to settle at his previous clubs. However, he concluded the press conference by adding that he hopes to sign a new contract at the club in the near future, drawing laughter from the journalists gathered with his humorous analogy.

“I want to extend my contract with Partizan. You know, it’s like an emotional relationship between two people. First you set up a meeting, then you have lunch, later on you go out for a dinner and after some time you start living together. Next up is marriage, isn’t it?

“The marriage contract has to be signed by both parties, one is not enough. Love between the two exists, there’s nothing wrong going on there, but we’ll need some more time as marriage needs more than just love. Personally, I’m more than optimistic.”
