Nelo Vingada succeeds Manuel Jose at Al-AhlyPortuguese appointed on two-year deal Egyptian champions Al-Ahly have announced that legendary manager Manuel Jose will be replaced by a fellow Portuguese, with experienced boss Nelo Vingada taking the reigns.Manuel Jose ended his seven-year association with the club last month by clinching the domestic championship, before leaving to take up the position of Angolan national team manager on a one-year deal. The Red Devils took their time before deciding on a new coach, but confirmed on Friday that 56-year-old Vingada will take charge at the Cairo Stadium on a two-year deal, just weeks after stepping down as boss of Iranian outfit Persepolis. Vingada brings with him a wealth of experience to the Egyptian capital. Indeed, the well-travelled coach has already held two positions in the country, having coached Al-Ahly’s arch-rivals Zamalek in 2004 before taking up a role with the nation’s under-23 side. Vingada cut his coaching teeth in domestic club football with Belenenses and Academica in the early 80’s, while also enjoying a four-year spell at Maritimo (99-03) and, most recently, a second stretch with Academica from 2005 until 2007. Having worked alongside Carlos Queiroz in guiding Portugal’s under-20 side to back-to-back World Youth Championships in 1989 and 1991, Vingada took charge of the senior side for two matches (both draws) in 1994. Since then, he has had stints in charge of the Saudi Arabia and Jordan national sides. Vingada faces a major task in replacing Manuel Jose, who earned the nickname ‘The King’ amongst Al-Ahly fans after winning 19 trophies with the club, including four African Champions League titles. The veteran coach was honoured by the Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak with the Medal of Sport of First Class for his contributions to Ahly and Egyptian Football in 2006.
