Toulouse agree Machado deal with Porto

Midfielder’s future still uncertain

machadoFrench side Toulouse have confirmed that they intend to sign Portuguese midfielder Paulo Machado from Porto, but must wait for the midfielder to resolve contractual issues with Saint Etienne.

The 23-year-old spent last season on-loan with St.Etienne from the Portuguese champions, and impressed despite Les Verts narrowly avoiding relegation. French press reports soon linked Machado with a move, with Porto happy to offload the player in spite of his good showing in Ligue 1.

Toulouse were thought to be on the verge of sealing a transfer earlier this month, only for St.Etienne general manager Vincent Tong-Cuong to reveal that his club had first option on the player and would have to be consulted before any other permanent deal were to go through.

“We want to sign him,” said Toulouse president Olivier Sadran. “We already have an agreement with FC Porto. However, the player has specific conditions in his contract with Saint Etienne that we overlooked. As we respect these signed agreements, it is now down to the player to sort out the problems with St.Etienne.”

Toulouse were one of the surprise packages in France last season, finishing the campaign in 4th place and securing a slot in next season’s Europa League. The Stadium Municipal is also where revered former Portugal international midfielder Oceano ended his playing career in 1999.

I'm Portuguese and I have seen him in play for St.Etienne last season and he's a good player. I don't know why Porto loaned him out or at least sold him for a good buck, and I don't even like Porto but at least make business.
