Ricardo Quaresma Russia bound?

Zenit look to replace injured Danny

quaresmaPortuguese winger Ricardo Quaresma is the subject of interest from Zenit Saint Petersburg, according to reports in Russia on Tuesday.

The 25-year-old former Sporting and Porto winger has had a season to forget in Europe this year, having endured unsuccessfull stints at both Italian champions Inter and Premiership side Chelsea, where he is currently on loan for the rest of the month.

Zenit, who have started the new Russian season with four wins from nine matches and currently sit in 9th place, were recently dealt a major blow when influential Portuguese midfielder Danny was ruled out for the majority of the season through injury.

According to Russian daily Sport Express: “Quaresma is a similar type of player and is the perfect substitute for his compatriot”. The paper did not reveal the nature of the deal being put together by the outgoing Uefa Cup holders, but another loan deal has often been speculated as Quaresma’s most likely next move.

The flamboyant winger left Porto last summer for Jose Mourinho’s Inter, making his second high profile move abroad, following a short-lived spell with Barcelona early in his career. However, Mourinho quickly lost faith in Quaresma and he was shipped off to Stamford Bridge in January, where he has again struggled for playing time under Guus Hiddink.

If Quaresma does make the move to Zenit, he would become the third Portuguese at Zenit, alongside Danny and Fernando Meira, who arrived from Galatasaray in April, while making it 15 Portuguese in total to have plied their trade in the country.

The first Portuguese to play in Russia was Filipe Azevedo, who had a brief stay with Lokomotiv Moscow in 2000. Dynamo Moscow signed no less than eight Portuguese in 2005, including Maniche and Costinha, as well as former Sporting man Danny, who is without question the major success story among his countrymen in Russia, having made a record-breaking transfer to Zenit last year.

he failed in the 3 top league cos the coach are not let him show what he capable of. ever think c.ronaldo without his footwork? the only different is alex ferguson let him display her talent week in week out. quaresma have more technique n skil than c.r but he seems have a problem with the coach. i'd love to see him playing with my liverpool side. if it doesnt make sense to u,i like to c him back to porto.
