Galatasaray’s Meira to seal Zenit switchTurkish side to cash in on Portugal international Portuguese defender Fernando Meira appears to be on his way to Russia to sign for Uefa Cup holders Zenit St Petersburg, according to reports.Zenit’s interest in Meira has been well established in recent weeks, and according to news agency Itar-Tass, the 30-year-old’s club, Galatasaray, have finally agreed to allow the former Benfica man to move on after just six months in Turkey. Quoting sources at Gala, the report claims that the club received a bid from Zenit during this past week, and have decided to accept the offer for two reasons: “Lack of will from the player” to continue playing in Turkey and the “difficult financial situation at the club”. Zenit’s original offer is thought to have been somewhere in the region of 4.5m Euros, but it is believed that the 2007 Russian champions had to up the bid to closer to 6m Euros to meet Galatasaray’s valuation. Meira - a 54-time Portuguese international - will link up with compatriot Danny at the Petrovsky Stadium. The former Guimaraes man moved to Galatasaray last summer, bringing an end to a seven-year spell in Germany with Stuttgart, where he won the Bundesliga in 2007. By Sean Gillen Add your comment |
