Portugal overwhelm Scotland to march on in U-17 Euro

Portugal 2-0 Scotland

Portugal defeated Scotland 2-0 in the Azerbaijan capital Baku today to make it two wins from two games in the U-17 European Championship.

José Gomes gave his burgeoning reputation another boost with an assist and a goal.

The victory sees the Seleção go top of Group A, all but booking their place in the quarter-finals of the competition, ahead of Belgium’s game against the hosts later today.

Portugal dominated from start to finish, having 16 attempts on goal over the 80 minutes, compared to just one from Scotland.

The Seleção took the lead shortly before the interval as Gomes laid the ball back to Quina in the box, who made room for himself to fire low into the corner. The lead was doubled in the 55th minute when Gomes headed in a fine cross by Gedson Fernandes.

Hélio Sousa’s team next play Belgium on Wednesday in a match that will likely decide which team finishes top of Group A.

Portugal: Diogo Costa, Dalot, Queirós, Leite, Thierry, Gedson (João Lameira, 69’), Florentino, Quina, Mesaque Dju, José Gomes (Mickael Almeida, 73’), João Filipe (Rafael Leão, 57’)

Goals:

[1-0] Quina, 37’

[2-0] José Gomes, 55’
