José Gomes hits hat-trick as Portugal U17s storm into semi-finals

Portugal 5-0 Austria

The Seleção continued their impressive campaign at the U17 European Championships in Azerbaijan by thrashing Austria 5-0 in the quarter-finals to book their place in the last four.

Highly rated 17-year-old striker José Gomes was the star of the show, scoring a hat-trick to take his tally in the tournament to 6 goals.

Hélio Sousa’s team will now play Sweden or Netherlands on Wednesday for a place in the final.

Portugal were far too good for Austria, dominating proceedings from start to finish. Gomes opened the scoring from the penalty spot, then doubled the lead with a header from an excellent Mesaque Dju cross to put the Seleção in complete control before 20 minutes had been played.

Benfica striker Gomes completed his hat-trick with another header shortly after the interval, glancing in Rúben Vinagre’s free kick.

Mesaque Dju and Miguel Luís added further goals. Yet to concede a single goal and having scored 12 times in their four matches in the tournament so far, Portugal will be confident of making it to the final one week today.
