Benfica are out of Europe altogether after a late goal by Portugal international Danny gave Zenit a 1-0 victory over the Eagles in Russia tonight.

The defeat, together with Monaco's win at Bayer Leverkusen, means Jorge Jesus' men will finish last place in Group C, therefore not even having the opportunity to compete in the Europa League.

The Eagles were left to rue missed chances in an even contest, most notably by Luisão, whose forgettable night was made even worse by a late red card.

"We had the best chance in the first half through Salvio, and could have scored in the second half through Gaitán and Luisão. We conceded the goal in our best spell. We didn't deserve this but it's goals that count," said Benfica coach Jorge Jesus.

Three improved performances (home and away versus Monaco, and tonight in Saint Petersburg) proved insufficient to recover from a nightmare start to this season's Champions League campaign by Benfica, with meek displays leading to back-to-back defeats against Zenit in Lisbon and Leverkusen in Germany.

Now in his sixth season at Benfica, Jorge Jesus has guided the Portuguese giants to the knockout stages of Europe's foremost competition only once.

Now the bad...Jardel just does not belong on this team as a starting member, don't get me wrong he's a real warrior, but when he has a brain fade and gives away the ball it's usually a pretty bad one I.e he gave balls away in the first half, which allowed the Zenit team into a 1v1 or 2v2 attack and only did not result in goals because of the poor play of Zenit.

Samaris doesn't look like a defensive midfielder. He just looks lost for me. You can see the talent but he just looks out of position...

Derley just should not be our striking option, he's got no experience at top level and there are doubts he'll ever be good enough. Why not gives Nelson a go.... For him I just feel sorry for him as he and other young players like Cavaleiro, B. Silva and unfortunately now Guedes will just waste away if they stay at Benfica.

JJ - Alas another year of failure. I know there was s lot of departures but some of the bone head decisions like buying Samaris for 10 mill odd to then play out of position was strange, the acquisition of Bebe was also strange considering he's not played and not getting another centre back or giving Steven Vittoria s chance and persisting with the crap Jardel was even more strange.

Thanks Steve

Can't wait for the Benfica excuses:

- luck wasn't on our side
- ref cost us the game
- we were the better team but couldn't score
- wah wah wah

6 years, 1 qualification for knockouts. JJ is the king of Europe.

Even if Benfica win the league (far from a lock) they have to consider the season a letdown. They aren't showing a lot of inspired play or quality. Not sure why JJ is held to such a low standard. He would have been shown the door at FCP and maybe even SCP a long time ago. Not to mention he's one of the highest paid managers in Europe!

@Atticus Finch - Your totally right. As a Benfica fan I'm sick of these excuses as well and frustrated that people make excuses for JJ when he clearly just doesn't have the ability to learn from his mistakes. I also do not like that fact that there is always some obscure unlucky event in the game which didn't go Benficas way to explain why Benfica is always knocked out of Europe by inferior teams.

Thoughts on the game:

The key tactical moment was after Benfica had got a foothold in the game and dominated for a large period of the second half and should have scored, JJ took off Talisca and brought on Derley (who did nothing mind you) to partner Lima up front. This destroyed the midfield dominance Benfica had and as they do not has a Defensive Midfeilder to shelter the defence allowed Jardel to be caught out wondering around in no mans land and subsequently allowed Zenit to get back into the game. But lets be honest. Anyone who watched the game would have realised that any decent team would have put Benfica away in the first 20 minutes.

Thoughts on JJ

Is there a comparison between the stubbornness of Bento and JJ. Well no but there are some comparisons for instance, JJ refuses to take the blame for his mistakes and subsequently refuses to change is tactics or learn from his mistakes as he obviously does not think he has made any. I'd say he also has his favourites as well.

Thoughts on JJ player selections and squad deficiencies:

Julio Cesar - Thumbeled everything that came his way (and that was only a few shots) and I thought he might have saved the goal which was hit directly at him. Is he an improvement to Artur or just another liability? I'd say from recent and current form the latter. We should have gone for Frazer Forster when he was available, but now he's now dominated in the EPL with high flying Southampton.

Jardel - Has his moment of brilliance, but when he gets it wrong it usually means he allows the other team a greatchance on goal. In this game everytime he touched the ball my heart started pounding. He made two give-aways that should have resulted in goals or at last shots to Zenit but they didn't, more to the incompetence of Zenit, rather than the brilliance of the Benfica defence.

Steven Vittoria - A leader and one of the leagues best defenders before moving to Benfica, but another one who has never been given a chance

Luisao - Still solid but without the support of a decent central partner he just looks a shadow of himself

Samaris - Good player, but not worth 10 mill and definitely should not be played as a defensive midfielder

Fejsa - Ha the potential to be a great player but any Olympiacos fan can tell you that this guy was injury plagued during his whole time there. Obviously his time at Benfica has been the same and lets be honest, how did this guy pass his medical.

Pizzi vs Bernardo Silva- So Benfica has 101 wingers and rather than give Bernardo Silva a game you ship him to Monaco and then try (and fail) to develop Pizzi into a central midfielder. My question is WHY?

Bebe vs Derley - If your not going to play him then why buy him. He cost decent money and has a 50% clause so I'm not sure this is a great deal. Bebe was scoring goals for fun at Pacos, a club that who were almost relegated but somehow Derley an average player at best seems to have the right to be in the team. WHY?

Nelson Oliveira - The talent is there. He's just never going to get a fair go at Benfica unless he takes up Argentine citizenship.

Ivan Cavaleiro - See Nelson Oliveira

Goncalo Guedes - See Nelson Oliveira

Ola John - Always looks good when he plays but Benfica are very strong on the wings

Talisca - Dominating the league, because the weaker Liga teams sit back and he gets time and space to execute his moves, but playing in Europe and against the bigger Portuguese teams he struggles as he is marked out of the games and has little impact.

Andre Almeida playing Left back - JJ, can you please stop destroying this kids confidence and play him anywhere else but right back. Every attack came down the left side through Hulk. Andre Almeida had a great game but hes just not a left back. Defensive midfield would have been a better option for his skill-set, but as you overpaid for Samaris you know are obligated to play him there to make sure the club gets a return on him.

Left back role - So heres a point. Anyone in the know knew who Raphael Guereirro was. In fact just a few months back Portugoal reported him. So with this in mind why was he not considered as a replacement for the left back role. Keep the 10 mill spent on Samaris, play Andre Almeida there (in defensive midfield) and bring in Raphael to compete for the spot and you have your next Coentrao.

Thought on Liga

So obviously I'm not happy about this whole situation. A lot of fans are claiming that now Benfica can focus on the league. I just don't buy into that and I will go on record and say the Liga cannot be won unless the others slip up badly. The squad just has too many weaknesses, and they will be exploited in the games with Sporting, Porto, Braga and possibly even Guimaraes and Belenenses. 3 points is not a big lead at this stage. Benfica is only top of the league because Sporting and Porto both have new coaches who are still feeling their way and are taking time to install their philosophy and style upon the team. Porto and Sporting will get better but Benfica's deadwood players like Jardel won't unless they recruit some key players during the break and I doubt that will happen as they'll probably have to sell first to raise some funds. Talisca's goals have also masked the bad performances and saved the team on a few occasions in the Liga and they are yet to slip up against poor opposition. Sporting are seven points back and Porto are just 3 and as crazy as this sounds I still think Sporting have a chance because overall their squad has far less weaknesses than Benficas, and has shown signs of improvement. They really only have the central defence as a real weakness, whereas Benfica have left back, central defence, defensive midfield and goal keeper. The favourite must be Porto and Benfica will probably just pip Sporting for second.

in 7 years (or whatever the figure) Benfica have had some pretty easy Champions league groups, but could only get out of the group stage once and have lost to teams like Celtic, Olympiacos Hapoel Tel Aviv, etc. The Europa league will now be more competitive as well as the Champions League qualification means teams from Italy and England will take it more seriously.

Final Thought:

JJ cannot improve the club anymore. he done a great job but he's at his peak and cannot improve. He cannot learn from his mistakes, acknowledge them and learn at a sufficient rate and continues to perform the same mistakes over and over again.

Thanks

Steve

I'm really upset that Benfica is out of Europe altogether and will not be generating any further points for the league. Hoping Sporting will get through bc Estoril and Rio Ave are out of the EL.

So refreshing to hear a Benfiquista actually admit this: " Jorge Jesus is held to a lower standard". So so so true. Both by his President and by the fans. You are 150% right when you say he would've been axed a long time ago at Porto or SCP.

His obvious failures as a coach in the past 6 years seem to be glossed over by Benfiquistas perhaps due to his glorious mullet. But look at what an actual good coach (who was also at Benfica), Ronald Koeman is doing at Southampton this season. Makes one wonder.

Benfica eliminated form champions league and europa league wowwww i am very very happy as i am not fan of any other club in portugal but i just hate benfica because benfica is the club which is ruining portuguese talent in the likes of Nelson Oliviera, Bebe, Goncalo Guedes, Bernardo Silva, Pizzi and many many more other young talent.. What the hell strategy of this club is?? I don't understand.. Dont know is this Portuguese league or Brazilian/Argentinian League.. I hate Jorge Jesus he has bunch of Portuguese talent on bench but still he does not give them time he just preffers south americans over portuguese players i think JJ is not portuguese and above all he is not patriot of Portugal.. Sporting plays 7 or 8 portuguese players and all of them play for portugal if benfica play with 4 or 5 quality players regularly then they all must represent Seleccao and Portugal can win something big.. Benfica is just wasting talent.. I am happy that they are eliminated from europe i will be more happy if they don't win a single trophy this season..

Goncalo guedes:
Predictors are saying that this lad is equal to ronaldo but i think this is his bad luck that he is playing for benfica.. If he plays for sporting than he must be given some time in champions league an portuguese league in senior squad but this is his bad luck that he is benfica player.. His talent will be wasted and benfica will not give him playing time.. If benfica pays attention to this lad than he could turn out to be another ronaldo but i think this is impossible..

Bernardo Silva:
He could turn out to be another rui costa but this is his bad luck that he is playing for this club who is wasting own talent and giving chance to other players especially south americans.. Sad moment for portuguese football and no one ask to club and JJ for this.. Even when benfica played matches in champions league opposition teams have more portuguese in starting XI than benfica :'( This is so hurting.. If portuguese clubs support Seleccao like german clubs support their team than portugal can be one of the biggest team in the world as we have enough talent but they are not getting time from their clubs espocially BENFICA and PORTO..

“Today he played his best game since joining Lille. He was better than any other player on the pitch. I’m very happy for him and for the club.”
