Marítimo 1-2 Porto: late Pietuszewski stunner in Madeira keeps up Dragons’ relentless start

Porto were made to work hard but maintained their perfect record in the Liga Portugal, coming from behind to beat Marítimo 2-1 in Madeira.

Polish teenager Oskar Pietuszewski was the hero of the hour, scoring a brilliant individual goal shortly after coming on as substitute to complete the comeback. The 18-year-old winger controlled a long ball over the top of the Marítimo defence by compatriot Jakub Kiwior, cut back away from goal before twisting and firing an unstoppable shot into the opposite top corner of the net past impressive Marítimo goalkeeper Fran Vieites. There was an anxious wait for Porto’s players and fans as VAR checked for offside before confirming what turned out to be the winning goal.

It was no more than the visitors deserved after dominating the match, outshooting the islanders 19-7 with expected goals 2.32-0.20 in Porto’s favour.

Rare Diogo Costa blunder

Yet it was the hosts who took the lead, Gábor Szalai’s speculative shot from range leading to a collector’s item, a mistake by Portugal goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who misjudged the effort and let it skid into the corner of the net without diving.

Porto equalised shortly before the break through Victor Froholdt, the Dane following up after Francisco Moura’s header had been well saved by Vieites.

The Spanish goalkeeper was having a fine game and a series of excellent saves in the second half seemed likely to earn his team a point.

The Polish connection had other ideas though, Pietuszewiski’s moment of magic keeping up Porto’s 100% winning start to the season as the reigning champions make it eight wins in eight Primeira Liga matches.
