Carlos Carvalhal has become the fourth coach to be dismissed this season in Portugal’s top flight. Famalicão announced Carvalhal has been let go the day after the club’s shock defeat in the Portuguese Cup at third-tier Paredes.

A statement on the official Famalicão website reads:

“Famalicão and the coach Carlos Carvalhal have terminated the contract between them by mutual agreement. Futebol Clube de Famalicão thanks the manager and the coaching staff for the effort and professionalism they always showed at the service of this institution, and wish them every success on a personal and professional level.”

The experienced Carvalhal went into Sunday’s Cup game under severe pressure after a poor start to the Liga Portugal campaign, with just one win in 8 games, and off the back of an embarrassing 4-1 home defeat against Alverca.

Paredes pulled off a shock 1-0 win as Famalicão became one of six clubs felled by lower league opposition in the Portuguese Cup.

The likeable Carvalhal, 60 years old, may now return to TV commentary, a role he undertook with some élan last season.

Famalicão have appointed in-house coach Ricardo Silva as the interim manager.
