Porto, Benfica or Sporting? A simple guide to this season’s Liga Portugal title race

Porto leads the table at the start of the 2026/27 title race in Portugal, but there is no use in picking a champion this early. Although Porto leads the table after 10 matches, Sporting and Benfica are following closely and there is over two thirds of the season remaining.

Porto have been the hardest team to score against so far, conceding just four goals. Sporting have only lost one game, but have dropped points in four matches, while Benfica have scored more goals than the other two teams in their games so far, despite having played a game less.

Standings as of 01 November 2026

The standings are based on Liga Portugal matches completed by 01 November 2026. Porto beat Marítimo 4-0 on Saturday, and the result is reflected in the standings. Porto have won all ten of their matches so far.

Sporting CP’s indifferent form has cost coach Rui Borges his job, with six victories, three draws and one defeat thus far. Benfica have seven victories, one draw, and one loss after nine matches, their only reverse coming at the Estádio do Dragão against Porto.

Porto

Reigning champions Porto are currently the favourites to retain their crown. They have ten victories, 30 points, 25 goals scored, and only four conceded. Being under the leadership of coach Francesco Farioli, the team is well-coordinated and moves effectively. The 3-1 victory over Benfica on September 20 was a turning point for Porto, as they overwhelmed their bitter rivals and scored two more goals after ten-man Benfica had initially equalised.

Though Porto have started well in their early games this season, they have been vulnerable to quick counterattacks when they lose possession. Despite their impeccable start to the domestic campaign, their confidence may have been shaken by a poor European performance so far, losing all three of their first Champions League matches.

Sporting

Sporting seemed to be back on track when rising to second after overcoming Braga with a 3-1 win on October 9th. Luis Suárez scored in the second half as they fought back from behind. But two defeats soon after, to LASK Linz in the Champions League and Académico de Viseu in the Liga Portugal, severely undermined the position of coach Rui Borges.

On Sunday 01 November the coach was sacked with B-team manager Tiago Fernandes taking charge on an interim basis, before the expected appointment of Paulo Fonseca.

With the high turnover of players in the summer also to contend with, Sporting are desperately in search of consistency to stay in the title race.

Benfica

Benfica have netted 26 goals in nine matches; more than Porto and Sporting. Their win in a tough match against high-flying Santa Clara clearly indicated the club’s strong title aspirations this season. They have a good chance of closing the gap to Porto to just five points tonight, as they host Alverca at the Estádio da Luz.

However, their 3-1 defeat versus Porto has definitely been a blow to their efforts. Although Alexander Bah briefly equalized for Benfica after Clément Lenglet was dismissed for a second yellow card, Porto’s dominance thereafter showed Benfica they needed to defend better in future games. They have conceded eight goals so far this season, double the amount Porto have let in, and while they have been fantastic from the attacking point of view, Benfica have shown weakness defensively.

The Head-to-Heads

Porto defeated Benfica 3-1 on 20 September 2026 in their first league meeting of the season. Five head-to-head matches between Porto, Benfica and Sporting remain: Porto will host Sporting on 29 November; Benfica will host Sporting on 27 December; Benfica will host Porto on 28 February 2027; Sporting will host Porto on 11 April; and Sporting will host Benfica on 9 May.

The first meetings between these three title contenders are scheduled for the first half of the season, with the return fixtures in the second half. The February match between Benfica and Porto could prove critical to the title race if the standings remain tight.

Odds around Porto, Benfica and Sporting

According to the odds posted on October 10th, Porto are the favourites to win the Liga Portugal, followed by Benfica in second and Sporting in third. The odds are set at 10/11 for Porto, 9/4 for Benfica and 10/3 for Sporting. Sporting have climbed in the league after their 3-1 win over Braga on October 9th, but championship odds are based on bookmakers’ views of who should be favourites, not league position. Betting odds are subject to change.

When betting on Liga Portugal odds, distinguish between match odds and season odds. A team with low odds to win a match is not necessarily the favourite to win the league. Match odds reflect the chances of winning one game, while season odds reflect the likelihood of winning the title. These odds reflect the league standings as Porto lead the table and have the best defensive record, while Benfica has scored the most goals. The well-known football saying claims: “the offence wins games, the defence wins championships”. Sporting need to turn more draws into wins to get back into contention .

What each club must prove next

Porto need to maintain their miserly defence and add more firepower to their attack. Samu Aghehowa is still searching for his best form after retuning from long-term injury, and if he starts firing Porto will be difficult to stop. Sporting must turn more draws into wins and strengthen their defensive transitions. Benfica need to improve their defence without sacrificing their strong attacking performance.
