It wasn’t pretty but Sporting beat Moreirense 1-0 in Lisbon this evening to give new coach Paulo Fonseca a winning start to life in the Alvalade dugout.
Moreirense came into the game on the back of two victories and a solid display by the northerners kept chances at a minimum for the hosts, albeit without carrying a threat of their own.
It needed a moment of magic on the hour mark from prolific striker Luis Suárez to decide the match. The Colombian latched onto a Doumbia pass, cut inside his marker and smashed a cross-shot with such ferocity it gave Moreirense goalkeeper André Ferreira no chance of keeping it out of the net.
Fonseca will be pleased with the three points but tonight’s display shows he has plenty of work to do to get Sporting playing at a level he and their fans expect.
