Portuguese champions left reeling by German outfit

Benfica had no answer to Bayer Leverkusen's aggressive, high-pressing gameplan tonight, falling to a 3-1 defeat that could have been a lot worse.

Strikes from Kiessling and Son gave the hosts a comfortable two-goal cushion after an embarrassingly one-sided half in which the Germans had 14 attempts at goal compared to two from Benfica.

A fine Salvio goal on the hour mark briefly gave the Eagles hope of an unlikely point, but a dubious penalty awarded against Jardel and converted by Calhanoglu immediately afterwards snuffed out those hopes.

Shakhtar Donetsk 2-2 FC Porto

Despite dominating for much of the match Porto looked like they were heading for defeat after falling 2-0 down in Ukraine against Shakhtar Donetsk, but two Jackson Martínez goals in the 89th and 94th minute earned the Dragons a draw.

A point was the least Julen Lopetegui's side deserved, and it is enough to keep Porto top of Champions League Group H. The northerners also kept their unbeaten record in all competitions this season intact.

Nemanja Matić's goal beats Sporting

Sporting 0-1 Chelsea

Former Benfica man Nemanja Matić's 34th minute header was the difference for Chelsea as they beat Sporting in what was a spirited performance from the Leões. 

Chelsea had dominated the first half and were well deserving of their lead but Sporting improved greatly in the second half and were able to take the game to the visitors although the hosts had to rely on that man Rui Patrício several times during the match.

Benfica took full advantage of points dropped by 3 out of the 4 teams who started Week Six in the top four by beating Estoril 3-2 to go four points clear at the top of the table. Marítimo coach Leonel Pontes continued his fine start at the helm of the Madeira club, a thumping 4-0 victory in Funchal against Vitória Guimarães sending the islanders into third place.

Elsewhere Boavista continued their fine recent form with a win over Gil Vicente, with Braga, Vitória Setúbal and Académica also picking up three points.

Sporting 1-1 FC Porto

The second clássico of the season was a typically feisty and action-packed affair. Sporting had the perfect start, taking the lead in the 2nd minute through Jonathan Silva, and after dominating the half the hosts could consider themselves unlucky to go into the break just one goal to the good.

It was a different story in the second half, with Porto the superior side. A Naby Sarr own goal brought the scores level, and Sporting were indebted to Rui Patrício for two outstanding saves, although at the other end of the pitch Diego Capel sent an exocet of a volley crashing onto the underside of the bar.
