The 2025/26 football season is around the corner, but while we are waiting and if you are bored of transfer talk and friendlies involving 20+ substitutions, PortuGOAL recommends two podcasts focusing on two very different aspects of Portuguese football but both equally engaging.

In March this year, Rui Abreu became the president of Paços de Ferreira at just 38 years of age.

The Football Heritage podcast tells the story behind how an ardent fan of one of Portugal’s historical clubs, who had created the club’s ultras supporters group back in the day, became the leader of the club.

Abreu himself is the main guest of the podcast as they delve into the history of Paços, the constant fight for survival for any team not called Benfica, Porto or Sporting in the Portuguese football landscape, and the hopes for the future for a modest team that has often punched above its weight, even making it to European competition on several occasions.

At the other end of the spectrum when it comes to Portuguese football fame is José Mourinho. The Libero podcast turned their attention to the charismatic coach in their latest episode entitled The Rise and Fall of José Mourinho.

Absurdly successful, often controversial and never less than compelling, Mourinho’s career is analysed by renowned football journalists Jack Pitt-Brooke, James Horncastle and the walking football encyclopaedia named Jonathan (just don’t ask him about Ronaldo’s role for Portugal!) Wilson.
