After the (typically) slow start we made with those two draws, I fully expect us to go on and win the group now. It's the Portuguese way: when there is room to relax we tend to do so, which is why we often start qualifying campaigns and even tournaments rather slowly, but then when we have no more room for error and simply have to perform we usually do. How many times have we seen this before? Lol!

I expect us to beat Ukraine in Kiev. It's a big and important match, which suits us and the Portuguese mentality mentioned above. The Kiev stadium has a big pitch with lots of space, which should suit our creative and attacking players. Also I don't think Ukraine are really as strong as their current position in the table suggests (for example, they could only beat Luxembourg by a single goal both home and away). Ukraine also finish the group away to Serbia, which will likely be a tough fixture for them. In any case, it's not that important really to top the group and we just have to make sure we finish in the top two to qualify directly, and I have no doubts that we will.

As for Bernardo, he's great but he's not even on Deco's level yet. Nani, Moutinho, Quaresma have all proven to be an excellent 1-2 punch with Ronaldo throughout the years and Andre Silva showed lots of early signs. I would like to see Bernardo take the torch but it's way too early and disrespectful in my view to claim he's the best CR's ever had.

Our problem [ironically] is our production in the final third. Bernardo is phenomenal, but a finisher, he is not. Our current solution of scoring by committee hasn't quite yielded the desired result. Ronaldo is still scoring the bulk of our goals. What we need is a Pauleta-type player and none of our forwards fit that. Silva, Guedes, Leao, and Paciencia aren't that. I think that's why Santos stuck with Eder for as long as he did.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“When I said Portugal were contenders to win Euro 2016 they said I was crazy. I say the same thing now. Portugal are not favourites for Euro 2020 but we are contenders and will be fighting to win it. We've won 2 tournaments in the last 4 years.”
