Portugal star Raphaël Guerreiro agrees new Borussia Dortmund deal

German side Borussia Dortmund have announced that Portuguese left-back Raphaël Guerreiro is set to sign an extension to his current contract, tying him to the Bundesliga club until 2023.

Guerreiro’s deal runs out at the end of the season and there was some speculation during the summer about a possible move, with Barcelona suggested as potential suitors for the 25-year-old, who has been at Dortmund since 2016.

However, sporting director Michael Zorc told journalists on Thursday that terms have been agreed to extend Guerreiro’s stay with a three-year extension. Guerreiro, who previously played for French club Lorient, has made 84 appearances for Dortmund, scoring 15 goals and registering 17 assists.

"We've continued our discussions with him over the course of recent weeks. A general agreement has now been reached between the club and player over a contract extension until 2023. I think we'll get it over the line,” Zorc said.

Lopes relief after Lyon extension

Guerreiro’s new contract comes not long after fellow Seleção international Anthony Lopes renewed his deal with French club Lyon. Goalkeeper Lopes, who was also set to become a free agent next summer, signed a four-year extension with the Ligue 1 club after months of tough negotiations.

"It's a relief for everyone, I think,” Lopes said after the announcement. “It was a rather long soap opera but, on both sides, we wanted to do things very well. Now everyone is very happy. [Club president, Jean-Michel Aulas] took matters into his own hands; he was the one who finalised all this. He played a very important role."
