GERMANY: André Silva strikes again in Frankfurt win

André Silva is certainly finding his feet in the Bundesliga with Frankfurt. Having scored his first goal for his new club last weekend against Borussia Dortmund in a 2-2 draw, the Portugal striker followed that up with another on Friday evening.

Silva got what proved to be the winning goal as Frankfurt won 2-1 away at Union Berlin, a result which for now moves the club up into 7th place and represents improved form after a difficult start to the new campaign.

Having started last week up front alongside compatriot and former Porto colleague Gonçalo Paciência, this time Silva found himself partnering former Sporting striker Bas Dost in Berlin. It was Dost who opened the scoring after a goalless first half, with Silva playing a small role in a build-up which ultimately ended when Filip Kostic’s shot was parried into the path of Dutchman Dost for a simple finish three minutes after the re-start.

Frankfurt doubled their advantage not long after the hour and this time it was Silva who was to find the net. An excellent burst down the right flank from midfielder Djibril Sow saw the Swiss produce a perfect cross into the centre for Silva, who calmly headed the ball past Union goalkeeper Rafal Gikiiewicz.

Union pulled a goal back late on through Anthony Ujah (86’) shortly after Paciência had entered the action, while Silva remained on the pitch for the full ninety minutes. After a troubled time during 2019, the 23-year-old has hopefully finally found the right home ahead of the European Championships next summer.
