Manchester City 2-4 Paris Saint-Germain
European champions Paris Saint-Germain wowed viewers across the world on Wednesday evening with a 4-2 victory away at Manchester City in the Champions League.
PSG dominated the first half, taking a 3-0 lead into the break, with Portugal midfielder Vitinha once again one of the key figures. Vitinha scored the third goal, which followed earlier strikers by Desire Doue and Moussa Dembele, with the football exhibited by the French side earning widespread praise from media outlets.
City rallied in the second half and Erling Haalan’s brace either side of Maghnes Akliouche scoring a fourth for PSG made for a lively encounter. The Ligue 1 side could have scored a fifth when City’s Portugal international Matheus Nunes brought down countryman Nuno Mendes for a penalty, but Ferran Torres missed from the spot.
The match had high Portuguese involvement, with Rúben Dias joining Nunes in the City line-up, while João Neves was introduced in the second half to join Nuno Mendes and Vitinha in the PSG ranks. However, it was midfield maestro Vitinha who shone brightest, picking up yet another Player of the Match award from UEFA.
“We take away a lot of positive things,” Vitinha said of the outing. “We enjoy ourselves more when we play a first half like that. The second half is normal. We were playing away against a fantastic team. What happens in the second half is more real. What we did in the first half was exceptional. We were able to support each other. We were good together, that was important. A very difficult match, a lot of pride in this team. We proved that we are a great team.
“This is just the beginning, it’s a long season. These are three important points in this phase of the league. We want to play the whole match like we did in the first half, but that’s impossible. For the most part, it’s positive, it’s a great result here. I’m proud of this team. We’re showing that we’re a real team, and that fills my heart."
