Gustavo Varela continues to be one of the revelations of the new Italian football season, after the Portuguese winger scored twice and registered an assist in Monza’s 4-0 win over Cagliari on Monday evening.

The star performance means Varela has a remarkable nine goal involvements (eight goals; one assist) from just seven outings in all competitions. Having cost Monza just €2.5m from Benfica in the summer, the 21-year-old is proving a masterstroke of a signing by the Lombardy club, who also fielded Ricardo Mangas and Dany Mota in the victory.

Monza’s official website described Varela as “scoring as usual” while coach Ivan Jurić admitted his player is unstoppable at present. "Varela scores every shot [laughs] hopefully he keeps it up like this. He's doing really well: he works hard and still has plenty of room for notable improvement.”

Chelsea matchwinner Neto salutes Jorge Jesus

Another winger from Portugal with a brace in a major European league at the weekend is Pedro Neto, who scored both of Chelsea’s goals in a 2-0 away win over Everton on Saturday. Two composed finished from similar positions inside the box during the second half gave Neto his first goals in the Premier League since August.

“In the second half we tried to get the best from their man-to-man press, we were able to break and get the ball across and I could finish well so I’m really happy with that,” Neto told TNT after the match.

“Composure? It comes a little bit from the new coach of the national team. He says when you are inside the area you need to pass the ball into the goal, so really happy with that.

Guedes finds the net again

Gonçalo Guedes now has goals in back-to-back matches for Real Sociedad in La Liga. Having struck during last weekend’s 3-2 victory over Deportivo A Coruna, Guedes this time emerged from the bench to grab a nerve-settling final goal in a 5-2 win away against Malaga.

A chaotic second half had seen the home side regularly threaten to fight back from the disadvantage, but Guedes’ simple follow-up finish from a rebound secured victory for Sociedad. It was Guedes’ third goal in all competitions this season in Spain, where he re-found some of his best form last term.

Amorim emphasises trust in Ramos after Milan win

Gonçalo Ramos may have struggled to yet truly find his feet in Italian football, but the AC Milan striker has the strong backing of Ruben Amorim after scoring a penalty in the first half of a 3-2 victory over Atalanta. Ramos also missed from the spot in the second half at San Siro, but now has goals in back-to-back matches after scoring against Salzburg in midweek.

"Above all, he's a team player, and that was the main reason we brought him in,” Amorim said of Ramos, who attracted criticism recently after going five matches without a goal at club level.

“He's talented, we tried to change a few things because all it takes is showing him a picture and he understands what we want. It makes things much easier,” Amorim added.

"He's a player I trust to help us throughout the season.”
