Roma 4-2 Cagliari

Rodrigo Mora came off the bench to score a vital goal for Roma in Serie A on Tuesday evening, helping his side maintain their impressive start to the season with victory over Cagliari.

Roma were made to work for the three points, with Cagliari going ahead through M’bala Nzola in the 10th minute. Roma soon turned the game around with goals by Emanuele Luli (15’) and Niccolo Pisilli (21’) giving them the lead, but the visitors remained in the contest and drew level at 2-2 when Daniel Maldini grabbed an equaliser with 10 minutes left.

By that time Mora had been introduced (56’) and made a dream impact on 85 minutes by putting his team back in front. Mora rose to brilliantly head in a cross from Daniele Ghilardi and send the Stadio Olimpico into raptures, after which Malen scored again to seal the points.

Following the match, Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini was asked about the influence of young players on the result, with academy prospects Niccolo Pisilli and Emanuele Lulli scoring the opening goals, before Mora notched the crucial third for his 2nd league goal of the season.

“They’re outstanding lads, Mora too,” Gasperini said. “I saw him score for Porto. I saw him score a goal for Porto that was very similar to the one he netted tonight. He is admittedly quite short, but he has good coordination and his leap and finishes are great.

“He jumped a lot today. He generates power almost from a standing start. It was a brilliant goal.”

Roma, who are in 3rd place in Serie A, travel to Udinese at the weekend, after which they head to Old Trafford to meet Bruno Fernandes’ beleaguered Manchester United in the Champions League.
