Portugal 2-1 Serbia

The upturn in fortunes for the Seleção since Fernando Santos became head coach continues apace.

Goals from Ricardo Carvalho and Fábio Coentrão in each half gave Portugal a vital 2-1 victory over Serbia in Lisbon tonight. Nemanja Matic scored a superb equaliser for the visitors and briefly threatened to spoil the night of 60,000 Portuguese fans inside the Estádio da Luz, upon his return to his former club's home ground.

But Coentrão's winner soon afterwards sent the Seleção to the top of qualifying Group I at the halfway stage. 

On Sunday the Estádio da Luz in Lisbon will be packed to the rafters for the Euro 2016 qualifier between the Seleção and Serbia. Victory for Portugal will put Fernando Santos’s team top of Group I and well placed to qualify automatically for the tournament in France.

List restricted to home-based players 

Fernando Santos has announced eleven additional names to Portugal's squad for the friendly match against Cape Verde on 31 March in Estoril. 

The list will take people by surprise as it includes only three players who have previously been called up to the senior squad: Adrien, André Almeida and Pizzi. 

FIFA ban reduced from 8 to 2 matches

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has ruled that the 8-match suspension of Portugal coach Fernando Santos be reduced to just two games.

As such, Santos will sit out only the Euro 2016 qualifiers against Serbia on Sunday and against Armenia on 13 June, but will then be free to take his place on the bench for the rest of the qualifying campaign.
