Last season Benfica remained undefeated in the league until after Christmas, but in 2023/24 the champions were undone in their Primeira Liga opener by Boavista in an action-packed match.

Two late goals saw the axedrezados turn a 2-1 deficit into a 3-2 victory in a game that lasted a total of 117 minutes and where both sides ended with 10 men on the pitch.

Porto also produced a comeback, coming from a goal down to beat newly-promoted Moreirense 2-1 away from home.

Sporting have kicked off their 2023/24 campaign with a 3-2 victory at home to Vizela, this Saturday night, courtesy of a Viktor Gyökeres double and a 99th-minute winner from Paulinho.

The Green & Whites came out of the blocks quickly with Gyökeres bagging a brace after just 16 minutes of football on his official debut for the club.

Sporting’s 2-0 lead unravelled quickly in the second half, however, after two goals in as many minutes from Samuel Essende and Nuno Moreira brought Vizela back level.

But just as Sporting looked braced for a disappointing opening chapter, Rúben Amorim’s men found a way to edge the affair as late as the 99th minute via Paulinho's late goal, adding some drama early doors for the Lisbon giants.

Arouca have the advantage in the Europa Conference League third round qualifiers after beating Brann 2-1 in the first leg.

The Portuguese club, making their second appearance in Europe after failing to qualify for the 2016-17 Europa League group stage, took the lead in the 23rd minute when Rafa Mujica rounded Mathias Dyngeland and found the net.

Daniel Ramos’ side doubled their advantage in the 74th minute, Mujica setting up Cristo González who side footed into the bottom corner.

Brann got goal back five minutes later when substitute Magnus Warming broke clear and beat Ignacio de Arruabarrena.

The stage is set for another exciting match in the second leg in Bergen next week.

A busy 24 hours for Benfica has seen them follow up their Supercup win over FC Porto by confirming the double signing of Brazilian forward Arthur Cabral and Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin.

Cabral joins from Italian club Fiorentina as replacement for Gonçalo Ramos, in a deal worth €20m with an additional €5m in add-ons. Youngster Trubin has signed a five-year contract from Shakhtar Donetsk for a fee of €10m with €1m in bonuses.
