Fernando Santos today announced the squad for Portugal’s upcoming World Cup qualifiers. Sporting’s 21-year-old winger Gelson Martins has been rewarded for his electric start to the season with a debut call-up.

Braga goalkeeper Marafona also makes the cut, João Cancelo and André Silva retain their places after impressing in the friendly against Gibraltar, and there is a recall for Dynamo Kiev left-back Antunes.

Portugal play Andorra in Aveiro on 7 October before travelling to the Faroe Islands three days later.

Still no call up for Rúben Semedo. Ridiculous. 3 center backs all over the age of 32. Pepe has been struggling with an injury and hasn't been playing. João Mário is also injured. Glad for the call ups of Gelson and Antunes though.

Glad Marafona, Cancelo & Antunes are in. Surprised there isn't a fourth centre back

Fantastic squad we've got so much midfield and attacking power now its amazing! But I totally agree Ruben Semedo definitely should have been called up! Center back is one area where we definitely need to start prepping the future stars and Ruben Semedo definitely is one. The guy is an impeccable defender with so much talent, great defending great speed great on the ground and in the air, great reading and anticipation, tactically intelligent, the guy is pure class! The best center back from Portugal in many years. Once he keeps it up though I'm sure he'll be in the squad. I'm sure he was supposed to be there but the sheer number of attacking and midfield stars we have made it tough and Santos chose to lean on the attacking side more than the defensive side. Next time he should be there for sure though.
