Array of recalls and new faces marks new era

Despite giving indications to the contrary in his first public statements upon becoming Portugal coach, Fernando Santos opted for an authentic revolution as he announced his first squad selection for the upcoming games against France and Denmark.

New blood has been injected in the shape of Cédric, Ivo Pinto, José Fonte, Adrien and João Mário.

Several veterans who were out of the picture under Bento have also been recalled: Ricardo Carvalho, Danny, Tiago Mendes and Ricardo Quaresma.

The revamped squad could spell the end of the line for the likes of Raul Meireles, Ricardo Costa, Miguel Veloso and João Pereira, all mainstays of the squad under Bento.

Faced with a barrage of questions, especially regarding the reasoning behind the recalls, Santos refused to go into details, saying simply: "I'm not interested in this question of a break from the past. What I'm interested in is planning for a brilliant future, building a team with conviction."

The coach also emphasised that although he considered the France friendly an important match, from which "I can draw some conclusions," his main focus would be on the clash in Denmark on 14 October, Portugal's second Euro 2016 qualifying game, having lost the first one 1-0 against Albania.

Judging by the initial reaction on social media, if Santos intended to rekindle excitement and expectation among Portugal fans, this first squad selection certainly seems to have done just that.

Full squad:

Goalkeepers: Rui Patrício (Sporting), Anthony Lopes (Lyon), Beto (Sevilla)

Defenders: Pepe (Real Madrid), Fábio Coentrão (Real Madrid), Bruno Alves (Fenerbahçe), Cédric (Sporting), Eliseu (Benfica), Ivo Pinto (Dínamo Zagreb), José Fonte (Southampton), Ricardo Carvalho (Monaco), Antunes (Malaga)

Midfielders: João Moutinho (Monaco), André Gomes (Valencia), Adrien (Sporting), João Mário (Sporting), Tiago (Atlético Madrid), William Carvalho (Sporting).

Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid), Nani (Sporting), Danny (Zenit), Éder (Braga), Quaresma (FC Porto), Vieirinha (Wolfsburg)

A bit over the hill, but could act as a good sub deep in a game. Harry Potter(Queresma) hmmm! Nani doesn't belong there right now. Some of the newer guys I'm not too familiar with (Pinto, Cedric) so can't comment. Glad to see Antunes and Danny back in the fold. Otherwise, looks like a solid core. Very happy to see some of the deadwood gone at last, Postiga, Meireles, Costa, Pereira, Almeida. A bit surprised about Veloso, or maybe not. But Elder, seriously, that won't last long.

Tiago! Tiago! Tiago! Exciting news, now lets see if he accepts. Tiago Mendes (along with Ronaldo, Ricardo Carvalho) are 3 of the only players to have been part of the old guard back in 2004. One of the most underrated and understated players in Portuguese history, always in the shadows of Luis Figo and Deco. Any midfield which includes him and Moutinho would be optimal.

So if he called Danny, does this mean the formation changes? Very interesting news.

Well it's a very new squad, and this alone is positive! We were all so fed up with Bento's same old predictable squads that this really is a breath of fresh air. A few thoughts: some may question Ricardo Carvalho's inclusion and think he's over the hill, it would appear not though. He's leading Monaco's defense and they've kept 2 successive clean sheets in the CL. I still think he's the best CB this country has ever produced and his experience will be useful. Same goes for Tiago, he's been excellent for Atletico in the last couple of seasons and brings a lot of experience to the squad. Would've preferred Postiga over Eder and Bruma over Vierinha, but all in all an interesting first selection from Santos. I also hope to see a new approach and tactics, in contrast to the rigid ones we were seeing over the last few years. The only way is up!

Some bold changes. Tiago in the mid with Moutinho and Carvalho will be a great improvement from the WC. I don't know why Quaresma is on the team. I would have preferred his place going to a youngster like Rafa or Bernard Silva. Santos should try to call up Marquinos (PSG) I believe he is a dual citizen (Portugal/Brazil) and he can be the backbone of our defense for years. Overall, I'm happy with the direction that Santos is taking. We will have to wait for the team selection before judging his formation and tactics.

Some Thoughts;
I don't think that Eliseu should be on the squad, and can only assume, he is due to Silvio's injury.
Quaresma, who is finding it difficult getting on the field at Porto, shouldn't have made it either.
For those who are happy to see Tiago back on the squad, lets hope formation will change. Tiago plays really well in a tight compact style club like Atletico. If we continue with the 4-3-3, he'll get exposed. Hopefully Santos slots him next to Carvalho. Speaking of Carvalho, he hasn't looked as sharp this campaign.
I know that some have called for Lima, but he's been poor so far this campaign. We're going to have to get creative on the striker department. A false nine with Danny, could be the best selection. It would flood the midfield, which would help defensively and allow for quick counters. Let me add , that we all want attractive free flowing futebol, but this team just might be better served playing compact and winning off set pieces and counters.
On as side note, I'm really happy for Jose Fonte, who is finally getting some love. The guy is clearly a leader at Southhampton, and has been playing very well for a few campaigns now. I know he's older, but a deserving selection.

Sorry, but I've been less and less impressed by Quaresma with every game he plays for Porto, I think calling up Tiago Ilori would've been a far better decision than giving Carvalho another go, and while I like Tiago (as I do anybody from Viana do Castelo), I cannot see the reason for bringing him in while showing the youth side a favourable eye with guys like Joao Mario and Adrien Silva. If this is just to tinker in the France game, then go ahead. But I really think moving forward the keys should be given to the younger guys and the guys who have floated in and out over the past decade need to wave goodbye.

Finally we are going to see a rejuvenated midfield trio. We have had to endure Moutinho-Veloso-Meireles for far too long. It's about time. Tiago is not the future, but I think he can still bring it for the team. All the midfielders have earned a spot on this roster. That's what I like to see.. players who deserve to be there.

We have plenty of defensive depth too. The striker problem will always be there, maybe try Danny as a false nine? CR7, Nani, Quaresma, Vieirinha, Eliseu can all play on the wing. One of them needs to be dropped. Otherwise, pretty decent squad. Looking forward to see it in action.

Nelson, Marquinos has been selected already by Brazil a couple times, Portugal moved too slowly.
