UK-based newspaper The Guardian has deservedly acquired a reputation for excellence in sports journalism.

It is also a leading exponent when it comes to producing online and interactive content. We highly recommend, for example, bookmarking this outstanding feature profiling all 736 players at World Cup 2018.

As part of its coverage of the tournament in Russia, the newspaper’s online site has given fans of the leading football nations, including Portugal’s, the chance to choose their all-time XI of their respective country.

Tom Kundert wrote the brief profiles of Portugal’s 50 best players – 5 goalkeepers, 15 defenders, 15 midfielders and 15 forwards. Read up on the legends from past and present than choose your formation and select the players to come up with the greatest XI of the Seleção.

To give it a whirl, just follow this link.

With so much fantastic talent available, it’s a tough choice, but the fun application is flexible enough to allow one to dream…

I’m not old enough to have witnessed Lucas, Peyroteo, Baia or Chalana but I mean come on...seriously those guys can’t be in the all time 11. This current generation is about to replace most of them at this point. We won our first ever title two...

I’m not old enough to have witnessed Lucas, Peyroteo, Baia or Chalana but I mean come on...seriously those guys can’t be in the all time 11. This current generation is about to replace most of them at this point. We won our first ever title two summers ago and a few of those players should be on the list. This in my opinion is probably the more realistic 11. I know I’m missing a few but in general I think this is a stronger and better representation of us. I know some of you will question Cédric and Raphaël but don't take it lightly what they did for us two summers ago and they’re still going strong.

Patricio
Cédric, Pepe, Carvalho, Guerreiro

The most difficult to choose were the goalkeeper and full backs, simply because we haven't had as much abundance of quality in these positions as in other positions. Baia, despite occasionaly being error prone, is probably the best keeper we've ever had and had a very successful career. Miguel's career faded pretty quickly, but he was outstanding at both Euro 2004 and WC 2006 where we reached the final and semi final respectively. While Veloso just edges out Coentrao, due to his long and successful career, as opposed to Fabio who never quite reached his massive potential due to being seriously injury prone. The rest of the choices speak for themselves really. That midfield and attack in particular could match up to most nations' greatest ever midfield/attack.

Baia? Really?

Sure he was good, but he was very poor at WC 2002, no one remembers the USA game?

Patricio should take his spot on this list.
