How it all began: the first steps of Portuguese football

When discussing the history of the Portuguese football championship, it is important to start at the beginning. Football arrived in Portugal at the end of the 19th century, brought by British sailors and traders.

The first clubs, such as Sporting Clube de Portugal and Benfica, began to form in the early 1900s. However, an organised tournament at the national level did not appear until 1934, when the first official championship kicked off.

At first, the competition was called the Campeonato da Liga, which was a kind of trial format. It was only a few years later that it transformed into a full-fledged league, which became the basis for what we now call the Primeira Liga.

It was from this moment that the Portuguese football championship began, with a history full of passion, drama, and great names.

The golden trio: who dominated in different eras

It is impossible to talk about the Portuguese league without mentioning the three main clubs: Benfica, Porto, and Sporting. These teams have been at the heart of football’s development in Portugal and still share almost all the championship titles between them.

The Big Three and their contribution

  • Benfica are a legendary club from Lisbon that dominated in the 1960s, especially with Eusébio in their ranks.
  • Porto are a club that rose to international prominence in the 1980s and became a symbol of grit and determination.
  • Sporting enjoyed their heyday in the 1940s and 50s, have been more unstable in recent decades, but have a renowned academy that produced Balon d’Or winners Luís Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo.

These clubs have won the Portuguese football championship most often, setting a high standard for the rest.

How the tournament format has changed: from 8 teams to a super league

The first championship in 1934 included only 8 teams. Now there are 18 clubs in the Primeira Liga, and the season lasts almost 10 months.

During this time, the format has been revised several times.

In the 1940s, the league became regular, with a clear schedule of matches and a system of relegation/promotion.

In the 1990s, television and commercial rights began to be actively introduced, which gave impetus to the development of clubs.

Since the 2000s, UEFA control has tightened, with the introduction of licenses, stadium standards, and academy requirements.

All of this is part of an evolution that reflects how Portuguese league football has kept pace with the times.

Legends of the championship: who made a name for themselves in the Primeira Liga?

Among those who have left their mark on the history of Portuguese football, the following occupy a special place:

  • Fernando Peyroteo — the most prolific striker in Sporting’s history.
  • Eusébio — a symbol of Benfica and the entire country.
  • Deco and Ricardo Carvalho — key figures in Porto’s era of dominance.

These players didn’t just win titles; they shaped the face of Portuguese football.
