The trophy ensured that recognition would come, but no security for Rui Borges. As reported by Sporting on November 1, discussions had been launched to terminate his employment with Tiago Fernandes taking temporary charge of the club. This is significant because the fact is he was out of his position prior to reaching an agreement in relation to every aspect of his contract. The most recent managerial change in Portuguese football is not about two humiliating losses alone.

In football betting discussions involving Lambabet, changes in coaching staff can shift expectations about tactics, selection and future results. Understanding those factors may inform forecasts, but it cannot guarantee winning predictions. An incoming coach needs time, opponents adjust and available odds already reflect public information. A dramatic appointment is news, not an automatic betting advantage.
Official wording was narrower than headlines
The news release revealed negotiations to end the working relationship of Borges. Furthermore, it was stated that Fernandes would serve as interim head coach starting right away and details regarding a new head coach will be released shortly. This was an official update but Paulo Fonseca’s possible arrival was not mentioned in this statement.
Two home defeats landed on an existing fault line
It was clear that successive defeats at home against LASK and Académico de Viseu constituted the key moments that sealed his fate. Earlier wins away from home at Braga and Lens had seemed to have brought him back on track. In addition, two wins afterwards could not boost enough of his confidence levels. This casts serious doubt on any theory centered on that one bad day.
The standings in the league certainly made the argument for patience a difficult one to make. Sporting was third on the table at that time, trailing Porto by nine points. This did not mean that the title was out of reach at this stage. What it did do, however, was to create some uncomfortable questions as to whether the development of the team was worth waiting for.
The double remained real, but another season changed its meaning
Borges was present in December 2024 after João Pereira took charge for a short while when Ruben Amorim left. The league and Portuguese cup wins were achieved in 2024/25. This is the reason why his sacking appears hasty to people who can only recall that joyous period. This does not mean that this entire process can be explained by just that.
The team ended the 2025/26 season finishing in second place, six points away from champions Porto, and subsequently losing the Portuguese Cup final by 2–1 to Torreense. These defeats turned out to be significant factors in creating pressure. It is quite possible for an unexpected cup defeat to occur without undermining everything else done in preceding years.
However, the development of Europe makes it difficult for one to adopt an entirely negative attitude regarding the failures. In the last season, the team reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League before losing 1-0 on aggregate to the runners-up Arsenal. It should not be forgotten that the team did not concede any goals in London, which is a remarkable feat.
Renewal turned criticism back towards management
Just a little more than half a year ago, he was granted a new contract at the end of April. This is what makes the November situation even more difficult for Frederico Varandas and his team. The renewal of a coach’s contract does not mean accepting just his results but also his approach and ability to work.
Fonseca’s reported price makes this more than a routine replacement
Reports made on November 2 noted an agreement that would run until 2030, with approximately €5 million to be paid to Lyon. His potential salary was estimated at €3 million per year net of fees, while the cost incurred by Sporting on their end would be about €6 million per year. Net income and total costs are two distinct numbers, and equating them is quite misleading.
These negotiations have also been associated with money being paid in the opposite direction. Lyon apparently owes Sporting about €6 million related to its sell-on right from the sale of Afonso Moreira to Leverkusen. This could possibly explain the ongoing talks between the two teams. However, it does not mean that these debts cancel each other out or no money changes hands at all.
Early reports talked about the deal with Fonseca, whereas the terms of the exit were yet to be negotiated by the two teams. The later reports offered much more financially-oriented information. The above developments need to be considered sequentially, not bundled together into one statement about the completion of all processes at once.
One supposed return never happened
A crucial addition is made to the story of Fonseca’s career history. It is incorrect to state that he worked for Sporting in 2012/13. The first step to success was made in the league with Paços de Ferreira, which he guided to third place before moving to Porto. Later jobs include Braga, Shakhtar Donetsk, Roma, Lille, Milan and Lyon. Calling this decision a return to an old club and position at Sporting is making up a story not justified by his professional record.
Attacking style of play, ability to adjust, as well as developing young talent are key elements in the assessment of Fonseca’s work. These qualities can easily explain the club’s interest in him. This does not mean that all problems will go away because of his coming. Everything depends on the amount of training, the right team and mutual understanding.
An interim appointment exposes the immediate cost of change
The temporary promotion of Fernandes from the B team to be given first team responsibilities in discussions is a clear example of practical disruption – that another manager should get his players ready when there is still no clear head.
The ousting of Borges has more of a cumulative story behind it than a sensational one. Failure in a national title race, humiliation in the cup final, new domestic losses, and questions over tactical evolution outstrip past achievements and success in Europe. Even though the story can become even more sensational with rumors, the facts themselves provide plenty of suspense. The club has made an expensive choice in direction, but whether that was a better choice than the previous one remains to be seen.
