Lions beat Benfica to secure Super Cup triumph

In 15 matches against Sporting during Jorge Jesus’s time as Benfica coach, he had won 10, drawn 4 and lost just once.

Now on the other side of the barricade, the charismatic tactician needed no time to start redressing the balance from Sporting’s point of view, as he led the Lions to a thoroughly deserved 1-0 victory over their eternal city rivals to lift the Super Cup in the Algarve Stadium tonight.

Second season syndrome is a common phrase used in football these days. We’ve all seen the script. A club surprises everyone by managing to hold their own, or better, in the top flight and then teams dispose of them easily the second season around, forcing them to battle relegation…

The beginning of the 2015-16 Primeira Liga season is just under three weeks away and Portuguese clubs continue to make moves to bolster their line-ups in time for the big kick-off.

Sporting grabbed most of the headlines last week after signing Colombian striker Teo Gutiérrez and Brazilian centre-back Naldo. Gutiérrez signed a three-year contract with the Leões, plus an option for a fourth. The 30-year-old spent the last two seasons with Argentinian giants River Plate.

Naldo spent last season at La Liga club Getafe, on-loan from Udinese. The move should strengthen Sporting's centre-back position which was a major weakness last season.

The transfer window has been for open a month, and there have been some incredible moves in the Portuguese league, with Porto signing notable players like Iker Casillas and Maxi Pereira and Sporting hiring Jorge Jesus, Bryan Ruiz and Teo Gutiérrez.

Things have calmed down a little lately, but the press remain busy incessantly trying to second-guess the intentions of the Primeria Liga clubs as they build their squads ahead of the new season.
