The curtain has come down on the domestic season in Portugal for another year.

As usual, the campaign gifted fans of Portuguese football with memorable moments, joy and heartbreak, along with a generous dose of controversy thrown in for good measure.

Perhaps more than any other recent season, the traditional Big Three proved to be a class above the rest. But how will Benfica, Porto and Sporting look back on 2014/15?

PortuGOAL asked its three club experts for their assessment.

Sporting 2-2 Braga (Sporting win on penalties)

Sporting won the Taça de Portugal at the Estádio do Jamor on penalities in one of the most dramatic Portuguese cup finals in recent memory.

Goals from Éder, after Cédric Soares conceded a penalty and was dismissed, and Rafa Silva gave Braga the advantage after just 25 minutes but two late strikes from Islam Slimani and Fredy Montero took it to extra time, then penalties.

Sporting scored all of theirs, but a Rui Patrício save and 2 misses from Éder and Salvador Agra gave the cup to Sporting.

Benfica beat Marítimo 2-1 in a thrilling Taça da Liga final played in Coimbra tonight to complete another memorable season for the Eagles and their coach Jorge Jesus.

A fine Jonas header gave the Lisbon club a first-half lead, and Marítimo looked in trouble when defender Raul Silva was sent off early in the second half. 

But the islanders showed tremendous fighting spirit and scored a wonderful equaliser through João Diogo. With a penalty shoot-out looming, Benfica substitute Ola John was the unlikely hero, scoring the winner which gave Benfica their 6th victory in the competition in eight years since it began. 

Football fans in Madeira will have an abundance of top-flight football to watch in the 2015/16 campaign right on their doorstep.  

For the first time since the 1990/91 season, the island will play host to no fewer than three clubs in Portugal’s Primeira Liga after União’s promotion.
