Luís Figo had dropped out of the race to become the next FIFA president, fiercely criticising what he says is an "electoral process that is anything but an election."
Portugal's record appearance holder was a surprise late candidate making a challenge to long-time incumbent Joseph Blatter to head football's world governing body.
But after embarking on a hectic campaign trail that involved travelling all over the world he has now withdrawn, saying he has "witnessed consecutive incidents, all over the world, that should shame anyone who desires soccer to be free, clean and democratic."
