Over the last couple of decades Portuguese football has earned much acclaim for producing and exporting some of the world’s top players to Europe’s biggest clubs.

Nowadays it’s the country’s coaches who are in demand and are blazing a trail all across the continent – and beyond.

No fewer than 5 Portuguese coaches have guided their teams to the respective national championships in Europe this season: Vítor Pereira (Olympiakos), José Mourinho (Chelsea), André Villas-Boas (Zenit St. Petersburg), Paulo Sousa (FC Basel) and Jorge Jesus (Benfica). 

Bernardo brace as Jardim's men warm up for Juventus

Leonardo Jardim, aided ably by the fellow Portuguese contingent of João Moutinho, Bernardo Silva and Ricardo Carvalho, continues to oversee a spectacular season at Monaco.

Portuguese legend Luis Figo has thrown his hat into the ring to become FIFA President.

The former Sporting, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Inter Milan forward, 42, is the latest shock name to join the race to replace Sepp Blatter at the head of world football's governing body.

Figo's announcement that he is to run as a candidate follows that of former Newcastle United and Tottenham winger David Ginola.
