I agree that Portugal should revert to a 4-4-2 narrow diamond. We need to be solid first and foremost. I’m shocked that Palhinha hasn’t had any game time. He is clearly the best defensive midfielder in the squad and in the best form.

Bernardo Silva lacks stamina and should be benched in favor of fernandes. With a better midfield support, Bruno will be able to shine more.

That's actually a better lineup than going with B Silva over Fernandes in a 4-3-3 double pivot. I kind of like B Silva more so in that role however. Maybe drop Fernandes depending if Santos is allowed. I'm surprised we haven't seen Felix either....

Maybe drop Fernandes depending if Santos is allowed. I'm surprised we haven't seen Felix either. The kid cost a billion euros. William has now started two games and played more minutes than Felix, A Silva, Pahlinha, and Pote combined. A guy who doesn't start for Real Betis is somehow more integral than those other players who are all in form (except Felix).

Agree for the match against France and this tournament. But the future must be a new coach and a back 3 instead of back 4. Either 343 or 352 depending from opposition would fare more fit the players characteristics and allow to tap the potential.

Bernardo Silva seems to be getting off scott free and the blame is far too skewed on Semedo. Its Silvas job to cover the backs and he did not. Even after Semedo multiple times pointed at Gosens and Silva either ignored him or didn’t understand his position responsibility. Its not a coincidence Germany attacked all day down Semedo side. Not only is Semedo weak but Silva is tactically lacking. Both should not play but Silva bears responsibility which is being ignored because of his pass to Jota on the 1st goal.

It was obvious at half to all us pretend armchair tactic watchers yet nothing was done. Santos, Silva, Semedo did everything wrong and should equally bear the brunt. Blaming William-Danilo-Fernandes is either willfully or purposely ignoring the issues.

Is Dalot better than Semedo? His performance at the under21’s says no so you need to play different to cover him with smarter more aggressive players. Renato, Guedes, Sergio O even.

I dont know what Santos will do but formation will not change in a do or die game nor will full scale changes occur, those thinking this need to watch more football and play less video games.

Same people calling for Andre Silva are the same people saying he only scores tap ins and is not good enough, its just what happens every Euro and WC when the normies all flood Portugoal to quickly disappear after the tournament.

Anyhow, if Silva plays up front Portugal are obvious going for a late win or a tie. If Felix or Guedes get a start Portugal will be going for the win which is very tricky vs the best nation on the planet. No matter what you think of France, Portugal will get very little chances and need our best statistical finishers to finish. Anyone thinking Portugal can over run France in any scenario should go play the lottery instead, its not happening. Its going to be a slow, boring tie or someone will win 1-0. Lets hope its Portugal.

Agree on your Bernardo assessment. Well he did the long range pass for Jpta but else than that? Nothing. Ad short term fix O‘d bring Guedes for Bernardo snd Renato for William.

Thank you Matthew and Tom. Must admit been a little deflated and avoiding football website / social media since the loss. Not because of it but rather our performance. Grieving football I guess, we all have so much passion and desire for this beloved Portuguese team of ours.

After listening its given me a little optimism and regardless of the outcome let's hope Santos and the team give it their all. Mata, Mata as Scolari would say.
Viva Portugal!

Santos was completely outclassed by Jogi Low. He was terrified to give the Germans any space in between the lines, but he ended up defending way narrow, essentially giving them the green light to overload one flank, dragging our defense to one side, and then playing a simple switch out to Gosens who always seemed to have acres of space to work with.

Bernardo played a brilliant ball to Jota for the first goal, but he never seemed to care about Gosens. He's an intelligent player with superb work rate, so perhaps that was more due to Santos instructing him to stay central - who knows.

Bruno Fernandes was also invisible both defensively and offensively.

France won't push their fullbacks as high as Germany did, but they will still put our defense under pressure. I don't think Santos should opt for the same 11.

I would personally opt to switch to more of a 4-4-2.Bring in Nuno Mendes and move Guerreiro to the left wing. Bernardo and Renato should play in midfield alongside Danilo. Bruno Fernandes needs to be benched.

We can defend in two banks of four and then look to hit Jota and Bernardo in transition.

If we lose this game, Santos needs to be fired. You either play defensive Santos football with the right players/formation or you play proactive football with your best players. Look at Italy. They don't give up chances, they don't concede goals, and they are far from defensive. You can press high up the pitch, dominate the ball, and still be solid defensively. Santos does not know how to coach that style.

In fairness, Italy can afford to play proactive football with the group they're in. Very easy group. Don't get me wrong, Mancini has done a good job, but Italy have yet to face good opposition.

Agree. He‘s champion with Lille, how motivated will he be against France?
Btw. the same effect would have been available in the ALLIANZ ARENA AGAINST GERMANY. But of course you desist from this when you only play for a draw, not for winning.

Dont be suprised if France play a 442 diamond (or 433...they are essentially very similar)...we need to match that...with whomever ends up playing or risk being overloaded in areas like against Germany. The Germany game is 100% a tactical disaster and what makes it worse is not player selection but the inability to tweak it after gosens offisde goal...so naive from Santos. All analysts/pundits have said same thing...i wouldnt praise germany because we gave them that game not doing what france did and shut down the flanks. We made it easy for them...the fact we scored 2 doesnt make me confident Germany have turned a corner....we will see.

As far as selections...dont blame players for being played in ways that do not maximoze their abilities and that is happening. The way we set up and were trying to play will see bruno disappear and bernardo is tired...he cant be asked to cover gosens and then be apart of a fast counter...imppssible...actually Jota played well not just for the goal but he was put in the same no win situation...run in behind, support attack but dont leave raphael....thats a bad recipe.

Hopefully we have seen last of double pivot with danilo and william. Hopefully renato has shown he can play the 8 role alongside danilo and hopefully bernardo moves inside and its a who plays better fets the start with bruno....allowing for more pace outwide but not rafa...how is the guy with the least goals and form coming in over goncalves or guedes...Santos trick worked against hungry...i call that luck.

A.Silva and goncalves have 52 goals this season between them...goncalves player of year in portugal and silva team of year in germany...your telling me your not going to utilize them?

Goncalves is perfect for retaining the ball....tight spaces and offering a goal...i just dont get it.

Nuno mendes was injured for germany but i would be suprised to see him against framce becuase of pace.

It really is a shame we cant have a back 3 alternative for games...we could end up playing holland or belgium in rd of 16 as one the best3rd place teams...both of whom play a back 3.

Nuno mendes has played alot on the left of a back 3 for sporting.
You could have:
Ruben pepe mendes
Semedo danilo renato guerreiro
Bernardo/bruno
Jota ronaldo

That wont happen so lets go 442 diamond

Semedo pepe ruben mendes
Danilo
Bruno/goncalves renato
Bernardo/felix
Jota/a.silva ronaldo

Or if really getting creative but it wont happen

Semedo pepe ruben mendes
Danilo
Renato raphael
Bruno/bernardo
Ronaldo jota/a.silva

Or a flat 442 or 4411 ala 2016

Semedo pepe dias mendes
Goncalves danilo renato jota
Bruno/bernardo
Ronaldo

I like your 442 diamond idea, but I'm seriously not expecting to see anything but William -Danillo again. He is too afraid of other teams attacks and not confident in our very own danger capabilities.

Fernanto Santos doesn't believe in midfield game. But Joachim Low always believes in it.And Didier Deschamps also believes his midfielders very much.We can't win every game we play and we can win only few games without midfield.

1. 0-0 Nations Cup on the road at France, 4-4-2 I think with a narrow, tight shape , Semedo played well in that game, he does have a few moments where he can perform. Our defense played very well in the game, very tidy confident game.

2. Euro 2016 Eder off the bench providing a large target striker who can hold the ball and play with his back to the goal. You need a physical player upfront to match their physical attributes. Our small technical players will struggle against the physical and technically gifted French players. You need to bring some physically, watch Eder's goal holding back the defender.

We just need to survive this game, bring some possession and physically, get into the next round and anything can happened.

I still hope if we advance we get Mendes back, I can't watch R Guerreiro at LB anymore, always out of position and lack of reading of the game, gets destroyed physically, needs to be replaced ASAP.

Sanches and Mendes could be a great physical tandem to play together to give us more speed and stretch the field.
